Texas will be tight, but the fact that the GOP is even sweating Texas it is a testament to the networks and coalitions O'Rourke, Castro, and others have developed there.

We don’t know what we don’t know, but right now everything looks positive for an easy Biden victory. No cure now but to wait.
Tom Friedman pointed out that all the scorched earth shit the R’s are planning when Biden wins, would be nipped in the bud instantly if we flip Texas. Blue Texas means the end of the R party.

And good fucking riddance.

As your Canadian neighbour, I can do little to ease the tensions and onslaughts you each face during this election. Coupled with Covid challenges and tragedies, and numerous climate events, many days must seem utterly unbearable. I feel for you, as a friend across the border, and send you waves of love and friendship. Be safe, my friends. We will continue to be here for you, and remain your friends and closest allies.

Looks like Trump is planning to hunker down for the long haul:

Can I be the first to say that this is just insane?

He either thinks he is going to win and the people are going to storm the castle or he is going to lose and, well, I'm not sure...build a fortress?

Does he fancy himself as the six-fingered man? Inigo Montoya may wish to know what he's up to nowadays. And yes, he is a vile evil madman.

Maybe he figures that, if nobody can get in to remove him from the premises, he can stay there forever?

Again, Pennsylvania will take another 2 days at least after the election. But a blowout in Florida would be a very good sign.

I remember Bush v Gore. Only Bush didn't have armed assholes waiting for him to give the word. This will be the a long week.

(All?) States issue state id for people who don't drive. They look like a drivers license but say Not a license to drive on them.
The difference though still is that it is generally mandatory in Germany to own a personal ID card as an adult, while in the USA it is not mandatory to have a state id per my knowledge. If this has changed, please let me know.

You are required to identify yourself with the document of your choice when entering certain types of Federal buildings, like an airport, but that's it. This document of choice could be your passport, driver's license or state id then. Nobody can force you to get a driver's license or state id, if you don't want it, then you don't have one. And considering in some states the state id comes with a fee in the 70-80$ range I guess many there just won't ever want one at all.

So this means in sum it's still quite different, while going somewhere in the direction. Most people of course will a driver's license just because they need it, but still enough people are around which probably don't have one for good reasons.

It is needed for other things, notably to fly and to buy alcohol or cigarettes to prove you are 21. Probably to get a job too. I'm not sure, I haven't applied for a job since the '80s.

An ID card is € 58,30 here in NL for an adult and it is valid for 10 years.
It is mandatory that you can identify yourself, when a police officer or an investigating state official asks you for identification.
And no, it is not so that a police officer can ask at random for an ID. They need a legit reason to do so.
Banks can ask for an ID too when you open an account, apply for a credit card or a loan.
Shops ask an ID if they are not sure that you over 18 and try to buy alcohol.
You need to identify yourself when you go to vote and register a car on your name.
Drivers license an passport are accepted as ID as well.

This is a cultural issue. The Netherlands have, like Germany, a mandatorty residents' registration office. The USA as well as their birth giving nation, the UK, don't have such a thing. It is simply non existant.
I wonder how (local) taxes are collected, if people don't have to officially register the place where they live.

Has anyone pointed out that in order to build his wall, Trump still needs to seize the land from landowners in Texas, Arizona and other border states for the federal government?

Trump wants to orchestrate a federal land grab. Is that kind of eminent domain crap popular in those states?

You have to declare you live somewhere which has to be an actual residence of yours on your federal tax returns. That somewhere determines your state and local taxes.

If you do not have an ID card in the US [which is usually a driver's license - the only people with -just- an ID are people like me who can't drive or don't] then you really can't do much of anything, including vote, but also, think you need one to work, I need one to go to the doctor's and get bloodwork drawn, and any time I go to a new doctor....

My husband was just telling me about a friend who has a lot of land on the texas border he has been batttling the feds over. They are pouring concrete as we speak. But many of these ranchers etc. whose land is being confiscated still plan to remain Trump cultists. Trump could toss their children into the Rio Grande and they would remain loyal.
