Last October, Kanokporn Tangsuan, a doctor from New York, visited Disney World in Florida with her husband and mother. Doctor Tangsuan died after eating food that contained allergens she was deadly allergic to, despite the staff at the particular restaurant repeatedly assured them that it did not.
It boggles my mind that any restaurant would even make the claim that they could accommodate allergen-free menu items, given exactly this scenario. It's an invitation to a lawsuit.

And unfortunately, it's also a caution for people with severe food allergies. The business can claim its food is safe, but if they lie or are unintentionally wrong, whose life is on the line for that failure? Hint: not theirs.

Awesome doesn’t necessarily mean a positive and good thing. In this case I took it to mean, “I’m awed by this level of overreach.”
I feel like Flabbergasted or Boondoggled may be a better descriptor.

Boondoggle is a waste of resources or funds: a worthless project usually at taxpayer expense (although corporate boondoggle is also a thing).

OMG you guys this one is awesome.

Tangsuan's husband is now suing on behalf of her estate for negligence. Disney however is asking the court to force Tangsuan's husband into arbitration. According to them, when he signed up for a free month-long Disney+ streaming trial in 2019, he agreed to a TOS that required him to resolve any disputes with Disney through arbitration. Disney argues that this agreement applies not just with the particular Disney+ streaming service, but with any and all Disney subsidiaries; and that it was not just in effect for the period of the month-long trial, but a permanent agreement that applies into the future forever.
Disney reverses course on bid to block wrongful death lawsuit by widower who had Disney+

This is *good* news, but check out the marketingspeak of Disney here.
“At Disney, we strive to put humanity above all other considerations. With such unique circumstances as the ones in this case, we believe this situation warrants a sensitive approach to expedite a resolution for the family who have experienced such a painful loss,” he said in the statement.

“As such, we’ve decided to waive our right to arbitration and have the matter proceed in court.”
Waving their right... Fuck off, Disney.

The rape and killing of a 31-year-old woman medical resident has touched off protests across India as the country grapples with inadequate protections for women and increasing reports of gender-based violence.

The demonstrations began in Kolkata — the capital of the eastern Indian state of West Bengal — following the woman’s rape and killing, which took place on August 9 at a medical school. They’ve since spread to other states, as well as the country’s capital, New Delhi.

The death of the trainee is just the latest of several high-profile recent incidents of gender-based violence in India, and it comes at a time when sexual violence appears to be on the rise: According to the National Crime Records Bureau, there was a 20 percent increase in reported rapes in 2022 compared to 2021.
The Indian government implemented stricter laws against sexual- and gender-based violence, as well as some national strategies to address it, following international outcry over the 2012 case of a young woman who was gang raped and killed on a bus. But as the current tragedy and other high-profile cases suggest, those laws have not ended India’s systemic problems with gender-based violence, and now, many of the protesters say they’ve had enough.

Armed police raid Andrew Tate’s home in Romania

On Wednesday Romania’s anti-organised crime prosecuting unit Diicot said its officers conducted four home searches in Ilfov county and the Bucharest municipality.

It said the investigation concerned “a criminal case regarding the commission of the crimes of setting up an organised criminal group, trafficking of minors, human trafficking, sexual intercourse with a minor, influencing statements and money laundering”.

Several armed police wearing black balaclavas were photographed at Tate’s property. Two appeared to be carrying a battering ram to force entry.
I was aware of the human traffiking accusation but this has expanded it in more disturbing directions. Also Im not sure what 'influencing statements' might mean.

Yeah, that's new to me too. Thinking maybe it's what we refer to as witness tampering.

How the hell can someone be up for parole in 9 years for a collection of crimes of this magnitude?

An Australian man who pretended to be a famous teenage YouTuber has been sentenced to 17 years for orchestrating what police are calling "one of the worst sextortion cases in history."

Twenty-nine-year-old Muhammad Zain Ul Abideen Rasheed blackmailed hundreds of victims across 20 countries, ultimately pleading guilty to 119 charges involving 286 people. Most victims were children, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) said in a press release confirming that Rasheed targeted at least 180 kids under 16.
AFP coordinated with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and INTERPOL to catch Rasheed before more victims could be harmed. Their investigation started in 2019 when cops in Leon County, Florida, were tipped off to a sextortion scammer "masquerading as a YouTuber," an ICE press release said. He was first charged in 2020 and was then hit with more charges in 2021.

The investigation took years, authorities said, because police needed time to identify all of Rasheed's victims. Sorting through more than 2,000 images on his seized devices and untangling social media chats across multiple accounts led police to uncover 665 offenses involving 286 victims, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported.

In the UK inmates serving determinate sentences are typically released on licence half way through the sentence. US penal policy is very much an outlier compared to most other wealthy countries.
Further to this I’m left wondering at the effectiveness of the propaganda from the private prison industry that even American progressives have a firmer lock em up and throw away the key standard.

Hmmm I dunno about that; in the US you usually have to have committed a particularly heinous crime for judge to totally remove the possibility of parole from your sentence. People seem to be paroled pretty often here.

The other part of the equation, though, is the length of the determinate sentence imposed. In the UK, the maximum sentence for blackmail (which I think would be the appropriate charge) is 14 years, with release on licence after 7 years.

Matthew Falder, whose depravity and cruelty beggar belief, had his total sentence reduced on appeal to 25 years.
