I can easily believe he's a total jerk, or that he thinks his fans want to believe he's a total jerk, but I find it less easy to believe that the daughter's gynecologist went along with this nonsense for so long.

Is the HIPPA privacy rule not supposed to provide the daughter with some sort of protection against this kind of thing?

Furthermore, on my admittedly cursory reading of this, Adolescent Confidentiality and Electronic Health Records - ACOG (which I assume is the professional body whose standards apply to the daughter's gynecologist), the daughter would anyway enjoy medical confidentiality as a "mature minor" (unless she suffers from some serious mental disability that renders that inappropriate).

Well, yes, he could be making it up, which is almost just as bad. Or his daughter "gave" permission for his presence during the desk part of the visit. Or the doctor is a family friend, or a religious type that agrees with this type of doting father attitude. 40% of US would still vote for Trump; There must be a few gynaecologists in there. Just because it goes against the oath, if there is no complaint...

I also would have a hard time believing a gynaecologist would do this -here-, I'm not disagreeing with you, but I also can believe this can easily happen in some communities. They may simply say that the daughter insisted on his presence.

It certainly sounds to me as if the gynecologist's conduct , if t's accurately described, is quite likely to at the very least against the ACOG's policy on patient confidentiality and quite possibly illegal, too.

If you’ve ever strolled over to your daughter’s homecoming date and told him to have her home by 11 because you have a concealed-carry permit and a brother in the CIA, heh heh heh — you are, I deeply regret to inform you, on this spectrum.

If you’ve ever begun a phrase, “As the father of daughters . . . ,” implying that you didn’t realize that women were people until one sprung from your loins and that you didn’t care what men did to them until one did it to your babygirl — well. You might not be on the spectrum, but you’re spectrum-adjacent; you’re just a few Zip codes away from Hymenland. The phrase comes from a paternal impulse to protect daughters from harm. So does vagina panic, except the hymen doesn’t need protection, because sex isn’t inherently harmful when a grown woman chooses it.

ETA: Are Purity Balls a thing anywhere outside the US? The whole idea that the daughter's virginity is something belonging to the father, which he protects until agreeing to present it to her eventual husband, seems part of the whole mindset that leads to "honour killings" in some communities.
