One thing we all should keep in mind at all times. Things can (and will) change. Fast. However, abortion is not the political wedge issue here that it is in the US, and neither is right-wing evangelical Christianity the organised political force here than it is there.
Furthermore, to restrict abortion rights here would involve not a decision by a politicised Supreme Court but Parliament changing the law, on an issue that has always been decided on a free, non-party, vote.
You will recall that, at the end of March, MPs voted by 215 to 188 to force the government to abandon its plan to end the two-year trial of the scheme, introduced at the start of the pandemic, that allows women to obtain abortion pills by post, following a telephone consultation with a doctor, rather than having to attend a hospital or clinic. This was despite the fact the government initially wanted to abandon the scheme.
Seventy-five Conservative MPs voted against the government.

Similarly, the previous parliament voted by 332 to 99 to extend abortion rights to Northern Ireland, where it had remained illegal until then.

Before that, in 2008, when anti-abortion campaigners attempted to use the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill to introduce two amendments that reduced the time limit for abortions from 24 weeks to 22 and 20 weeks, these were defeated by 304 to 233 votes and 332 to 190 votes respectively.
Abortion rights have not been a live political issue here for the last 30 years.
I can sum it up in one word. Insanity.Given that minorities access abortion services four times more frequently than whites (I can find a source if necessary, it was a local TV news website) I'm finding it hard to square reversing Roe with the same party that is so irredeemably scared of the great replacement.
Can anyone explain this?
Sure. Many of us, including me, were completely blindsided by Brexit, so I don't take anything for granted any more. One thing we all should keep in mind at all times. Things can (and will) change. Fast.
Related and even more sad: You know there will be posts from conservative men who are shocked when their wife/sister/friend dies during a troubled pregnancy that should have been aborted...
Watch to the end. Also, fucking American Enterprise Institute. It's in the same league as the Federalist Society and the Heritage Foundation.Given that minorities access abortion services four times more frequently than whites (I can find a source if necessary, it was a local TV news website) I'm finding it hard to square reversing Roe with the same party that is so irredeemably scared of the great replacement.

Related and even more sad: More women will be murdered by their boyfriends and husbands. Second only to when a woman leaves them, pregnancy is the most dangerous time for women with abusive boyfriends and husbands.Related and even more sad: You know there will be posts from conservative men who are shocked when their wife/sister/friend dies during a troubled pregnancy that should have been aborted...
Not to be a downer, but I can picture it getting worse... When no fault divorce became a thing, suicide rates among women dropped something like 20%. ...that might get reversed too.Related and even more sad: More women will be murdered by their boyfriends and husbands. Efforts will be made in that direction as well, probably. None of this is about children. It's about controlling women so, sure, making divorce more difficult falls into line with that. Not to be a downer, but I can picture it getting worse... They'll just shoot them or expand slavery again.Given that minorities access abortion services four times more frequently than whites (I can find a source if necessary, it was a local TV news website) I'm finding it hard to square reversing Roe with the same party that is so irredeemably scared of the great replacement.

I don't know, Massachussets is safer now than most states. The US is sliding back to the Middle Ages.
What will be next?
Reinstalling the inquisition and witch burning?
Stay away from Salem MA. Better be safe than sorry.
Yes, but while I take her point that the proposal was obviously racist, the fact remains that black women are considerably more likely to have abortions than are white women in the USA. According to KFF.org, in 2019 33% of patients having legal abortions in the US in 2019 were White, 38% Black, 21% Hispanic and 7% "other."Watch to the end. You're talking percentages, but what are the absolute numbers?Yes, but while I take her point that the proposal was obviously racist, the fact remains that black women are considerably more likely to have abortions than are white women in the USA. While I don't know what percentage of women of childbearing age in the USA are Black, the overall breakdown is 73% White and 12.7% Black, which means Black women will be disproportionately affected by a ban on abortion.
After a bit of digging, I tracked them down at Abortion Surveillance — United States, 2019You're talking percentages, but what are the absolute numbers?
