The US may reposition forces and move some troops from Europe closer to Asia and South America, but I think trying to leave any European bases completely would be the one red line older Republicans have in supporting Trump. I could see 60 votes in the Senate to stop leaving any of our long term NATO bases.

Taking bets this all starts back up again once a Democrat returns to the Oval Office.
Sorry, that sounds like a poll but with money, no more polls.

Amazing how much money truly shit CEO's are making these days.

I just was shown a government document listing the 2025 salaries of Washington Post employees who were immigrants temporarily admitted to the United States under H1B visas. Their skills are considered “special.” It lists their base yearly incomes, before bonuses, overtime, golden parachutes, or what have you.

I scanned the list. The base salaries ranged from $60,000 for a designer to $223,000 for a vice president.
Then I hit the outlier. It was $ 3 million. It went to a “CEO.” There was only one of those in 2025, this guy:

That would be Will Lewis, the man whose two years of incompetent stewardship, editorial cowardice and less than ethical conduct brought The Washington Post to where it is today, a dreadfully diminished, professionally humiliated institution, drained overnight of nearly a third of its staff.

Three million dollars could have paid roughly 27 of the 300 reporters, photographers and editors who were sacked by Lewis before he took his own professional life and resigned under pressure. His resignation came in a particularly shabby fashion, after he was caught on camera hobnobbing with the swells at a red-carpet pre-Super Bowl event just hours after cold-bloodedly annihilating his entire sports department.

Fascinating account of how an abuser was tracked down from apparently minor on-line clues in the CSAM he posted that led investigators to his exact address.

A BBC World Service team has spent five years filming with Squire, and other investigative units in Portugal, Brazil, and Russia - showing them solving cases such as that of a kidnapped and presumed-dead seven-year-old in Russia, and the arrest of a Brazilian man responsible for five of the biggest child-abuse forums on the dark web.

The unprecedented access shows how these cases are often cracked, not through state-of-the-art technology, but by spotting tiny revealing details in images or chat forums.

What's with the overgrown Milburn Pennybags aka the Monopoly Guy moustache? He surely is not up for a part in a film, is he?

Despite building an increasingly screen-focused world, billionaire tech leaders are keeping their own children away from the tech they helped create.

As far back as 2010, Apple cofounder Steve Jobs told a New York Times reporter his kids had never used an iPad and that, “We limit how much technology our kids use at home.”

Since then, the trend of Silicon Valley billionaires keeping their families away from technology has become even more pronounced, thanks in part to the rise of social media and short-form video.
Excessive device use among children has become more common in recent years as busy parents turn to screens to find some peace. The trend has accelerated so much that some young children accustomed to extensive screen time are dubbed “iPad kids.” On average, children in the U.S. ages 8 to 18 spend 7.5 hours per day watching or using screens, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

YouTube cofounder Steve Chen said at a talk at the Stanford Graduate School of Business last year that he wouldn’t want his kids consuming only short-form content, noting that it might be better to limit kids to videos longer than 15 minutes.

“Shorter-form content equates to shorter attention spans,” he said.
I particularly like this part:
At the 2024 Aspen Ideas Festival, early Facebook investor and billionaire Peter Thiel joined Chen among the ranks of tech leaders who are setting strict limits on screens. Thiel said he only lets his two young children use screens for an hour-and-a-half per week, a revelation that prompted audible gasps from the audience.
Shock and awe.

Pulitzer Price winner Evan Osnos wrote a book about the ultra rich and had an interview with Swiss newspaper "Tagesanzeiger" about it.

He states that he was most surprised about how aware the super rich actually are that their lifestyle is hated by the public.

One rich person told him "If the world finds out how beautiful life on these yachts is the guillotine will get reintroduced." Another one: "If you as ultra rich don't feel remorse you are a rat."

Yachts are for him not only a vehicle, but mobile enclaves with distance from the rest of humanity. In 1990 there werre only 10 really big yachts, now there are over 170 ones over 150 meters long. He calls the yacht building industy a seismograph for the growing inquality on wealth.

Also some yachts are having anti missile defenses and torpedos, also museums, in-door skiing or operating theatres. It is for example suspected, that the paintg "Salvator Mundi" by Leonardo da Vinci is now exhibited on a wall of the yacht Serene owned by the crown prince of Saudi Arabia.

He's also stating that too much skewed wealth distributions often end in instabilities, catastrophes and wars. We are already experiencing the first small tremors, like Donald Trump. That's the irony of our time: Trump embodies the ultra rich, but came to power because he pretended to be a voice for the poor. This is the illusion he sold. The anger though he mobilised is real. The storm on Capitol at 6th of January was the violent venting steam of people, who feel excluded from rooms of power and money. They are hammering at the door. The tragedy though is that they are being lied to by the people who are carrying the key to it in their pockets.

Also he states that Americans have a contradictionary approach to capitalism: historically they always believed it is skewed, and the rich using it to their advantage. On the other hand they want to belong to that elite club. There's one big change though happening right now: more and more young people are coming to the conclusion, that the capitalism in its current form is a lie.

I wonder how much of that is concern for their children's well-being, how much is reputation management (remember Claudia vs Kellyanne Conway on TikTok) and how much is to prevent their children from realising how much their parents (generally their father) are hated by so many people.
