Inama said school officials approached her in early February of that year and insisted she take the banner down, explaining that the message of the poster was “an opinion that not everyone agrees with.”

The chief executive of the Washington Post is stepping down, the newspaper has announced, days after overseeing mass lay-offs.

William Lewis said in a message to staff that it was the right time to leave and that "difficult decisions" had been made to ensure the paper's future.

The newspaper had announced on Wednesday that it was cutting a third of its workforce, dramatically scaling back its coverage of sport and international news.

The decision was condemned by many journalists and prompted criticism of the Post's billionaire owner, Jeff Bezos. Executive editor Matt Murray said the cuts would bring "stability".

So, what's next?

Jeff D'Onofrio, who joined as the newspaper's chief financial officer last year, will serve as acting publisher and CEO, the Post said as it announced Lewis's departure.

D’Onofrio served as chief executive of Tumblr from 2017 to 2022, after a short tenure as general manager of Yahoo News while Yahoo was owned by Verizon. According to The Verge, his leadership at Tumblr included a decision to ban adult content in an effort to reposition the platform.

The Verge reported that the move led to a significant decline in user traffic. Tumblr was later sold in 2019 to Automattic, the owner of WordPress, for a fraction of the $1.1 billion paid for the platform in 2013.

As a travel writer, I’m accustomed to being asked about the ethics and the viability of visiting certain international destinations. I just never expected the US to be the country that travellers are avoiding.

But in the past 12 months, the Trump administration has turned the US into an unwelcoming, unsettling and dangerous place. I’m saddened, if not surprised, to learn that an Independent reader survey conducted by Simon Calder last week revealed that 80 per cent of respondents intend to avoid travelling to the US; only 11 per cent would still go. Of those with holidays already booked, one in seven are considering cancelling. Many travellers have already decided it’s not okay to visit the US right now. Others are asking people like me.

All of the US's traditional allies and partners, including the EU, the UK and NATO, are rapidly having to adjust to the new world in which the US can no longer be regarded as either an ally or a reliable partner. This dominates many international meetings -- I think at the moment the European Parliament is discussing procurement rules for member governments and whether they should change the policy to allow them to prefer EU suppliers. Similarly, the main European NATO partners -- the UK, France and Germany -- are discussing defence procurement policies that don't rely on US suppliers.

The US under Trump has demonstrated that it's no longer interested in supporting a rules-based system of international relationships, and the rest of us have to adjust to this unwelcome development.

I doubt it. The main concern is that we can't any longer rely on the US to honour its treaty obligations if Putin decides to attack a European NATO member (Norway, Estonia and Poland in particular, at least right now). Trump's threats about Greenland obviously had an effect, but I don't think many people other than the very far left want the US to leave its current bases.
