Pulitzer Price winner Evan Osnos wrote a book about the ultra rich and had an interview with Swiss newspaper "Tagesanzeiger" about it.
He states that he was most surprised about how aware the super rich actually are that their lifestyle is hated by the public.
One rich person told him "If the world finds out how beautiful life on these yachts is the guillotine will get reintroduced." Another one: "If you as ultra rich don't feel remorse you are a rat."
Yachts are for him not only a vehicle, but mobile enclaves with distance from the rest of humanity. In 1990 there werre only 10 really big yachts, now there are over 170 ones over 150 meters long. He calls the yacht building industy a seismograph for the growing inquality on wealth.
Also some yachts are having anti missile defenses and torpedos, also museums, in-door skiing or operating theatres. It is for example suspected, that the paintg "Salvator Mundi" by Leonardo da Vinci is now exhibited on a wall of the yacht Serene owned by the crown prince of Saudi Arabia.
He's also stating that too much skewed wealth distributions often end in instabilities, catastrophes and wars. We are already experiencing the first small tremors, like Donald Trump. That's the irony of our time: Trump embodies the ultra rich, but came to power because he pretended to be a voice for the poor. This is the illusion he sold. The anger though he mobilised is real. The storm on Capitol at 6th of January was the violent venting steam of people, who feel excluded from rooms of power and money. They are hammering at the door. The tragedy though is that they are being lied to by the people who are carrying the key to it in their pockets.
Also he states that Americans have a contradictionary approach to capitalism: historically they always believed it is skewed, and the rich using it to their advantage. On the other hand they want to belong to that elite club. There's one big change though happening right now: more and more young people are coming to the conclusion, that the capitalism in its current form is a lie.
