I see individual interviews or articles from individual Senators or Governors, and some statements from Pelosi and Biden, but no press briefings from the White House? From the Senate? From the VP? I get that they might need to choose their words carefully but come on... they have to say something.

Resigned Capitol Police chief blames superiors for readiness failure

In his first interview since pro-Trump rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol last week, Sund, who has since resigned his post, said his supervisors were reluctant to take formal steps to put the Guard on call even as police intelligence suggested that the crowd President Trump had invited to Washington to protest his defeat probably would be much larger than earlier demonstrations.

House Sergeant at Arms Paul Irving said he wasn’t comfortable with the “optics” of formally declaring an emergency ahead of the demonstration, Sund said. Meanwhile, Senate Sergeant at Arms Michael Stenger suggested that Sund should informally seek out his Guard contacts, asking them to “lean forward” and be on alert in case Capitol Police needed their help.

Irving could not be reached for comment. A cellphone number listed in his name has not accepted messages since Wednesday. Messages left at a residence he owns in Nevada were not immediately returned, and there was no answer Sunday evening at a Watergate apartment listed in his name. A neighbor said he had recently moved out.

Stenger declined Sunday to comment when a reporter visited his Virginia home. “I really don’t want to talk about it,” he said.

It was the first of six times Sund’s request for help was rejected or delayed, he said. Two days later on Wednesday afternoon, his forces already in the midst of crisis, Sund said he pleaded for help five more times as a scene far more dire than he had ever imagined unfolded on the historic Capitol grounds.

An army of 8,000 pro-Trump demonstrators streamed down Pennsylvania Avenue after hearing Trump speak near the White House. Sund’s outer perimeter on the Capitol’s west side was breached within 15 minutes. With 1,400 Capitol Police officers on duty, his forces were quickly overrun.

“If we would have had the National Guard we could have held them at bay longer, until more officers from our partner agencies could arrive,” he said.

Just before 2 p.m., the pro-Trump mob entered the Capitol, sending lawmakers and staff scrambling for safety. D.C. police had quickly dispatched hundreds of officers to the scene. But it wasn’t enough. At 2:26 p.m., Sund said, he joined a conference call to the Pentagon to plead for additional backup.

“I am making an urgent, urgent immediate request for National Guard assistance,” Sund recalled saying. “I have got to get boots on the ground.”

On the call were several officials from the D.C. government, as well as officials from the Pentagon, including Lt. Gen. Walter E. Piatt, director of the Army Staff. The D.C. contingent was flabbergasted to hear Piatt say that he could not recommend that his boss, Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy, approve the request.

“I don’t like the visual of the National Guard standing a police line with the Capitol in the background,” Piatt said, according to Sund and others on the call.

Again and again, Sund said, “The situation is dire,” recalled John Falcicchio, the chief of staff for D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser. “Literally, this guy is on the phone, I mean, crying out for help. It’s burned in my memories.”

McConnell says that if impeachment in the house happens, then impeachment will be considered in the Senate either an hour after Biden is sworn in, or 25 hours after he is sworn in. The senate is in recess until at least the 19th, and can't be called back into session without unanimous consent from the senators.

Hmm...Do they even have the votes in the Senate for the 25th? I'm not sure they do. The bar is higher. I, personally, would rather that they just go directly to impeachment to prevent any future Trump presidency as well as have it laid out forever that he incited an insurrection not out of illness, but because he was a criminal president.

I see continuing efforts at invoking the 25th as a waste of precious time that would be better spent impeaching.

I, personally, would rather that they just go directly to impeachment to prevent any future Trump presidency as well as have it laid out forever that he incited an insurrection not out of illness, but because he was a criminal president.

In regard to people loving Trump in other parts of the world, I think it's also important to remember that much of this attitude, for lack of a better word, is being exported. Some of these far right folks are actually traveling to other countries to do so, Bannon travelling to Australia for that purpose comes to mind.

Also, the internet being what it is, I would assume many of these folks are visiting the same sites. The Christchurch shooter put his manifesto on one such site, as an example.

A US Capitol Police officer has reportedly died by suicide just three days after the force was thrown into chaos when President Donald Trump's supporters stormed the Capitol building. Officer Howard Liebengood, 51, died off-duty on Saturday, January 9, the USCP announced via a statement. According to two sources who spoke to the Associated Press, Liebengood died by suicide though the USCP did not reveal any cause of death.

Liebengood is the second officer to die in the days after the Capitol incident where Trump supporters breached the building as an attempt to prevent lawmakers from declaring President-elect Joe Biden as the winner. The other officer, Brian Sicknick, had died on Thursday, January 7 after he was reportedly hit in the head with a fire extinguisher when the violence broke out.

It was reported that Liebengood was with the USCP ever since April 2005 and had been assigned to the Senate Division.

They would be likely not to vote on it before the end of his term in my opinion. In the meantime Pence would be acting president.

Vice President Mike Pence and a majority of Cabinet members would have to give a written statement to Congress declaring that President Donald Trump is unfit for office, and at that point, Pence would be given presidential powers.

Trump can write a letter to Congress disputing Pence and the Cabinet’s claims, but that does not restore his presidential powers. Pence and the Cabinet could contest his letter within four days.

If Pence and the Cabinet overruled Trump, then Congress would have to meet within 48 hours to decide the fate of the president, but the lawmakers have 21 days to make a final decision with at least two thirds of the vote. Presidential power would remain with Pence until there is a final decision.

What is the 25th Amendment and what could it mean for Trump?

Section 4 of the amendment, which gives the vice president and Cabinet members the ability to remove presidential powers from the president, has never been used. Many House Democrats say they will move forward with a swift impeachment if Pence and the Cabinet do not take action.
