FAKE NEWS

They came from across America, summoned by President Donald Trump to march on Washington in support of his false claim that the November election was stolen and to stop the congressional certification of Democrat Joe Biden as the victor.

“Big protest in D.C. on January 6th,” Trump tweeted a week before Christmas. “Be there, will be wild!”

The insurrectionist mob that showed up at the president’s behest and stormed the U.S. Capitol was overwhelmingly made up of longtime Trump supporters, including Republican Party officials, GOP political donors, far-right militants, white supremacists, members of the military and adherents of the QAnon myth that the government is secretly controlled by a cabal of Satan-worshiping pedophile cannibals. Records show that some were heavily armed and included convicted criminals, such as a Florida man recently released from prison for attempted murder.

Melania is awake.

“I am disappointed and disheartened with what happened last week. I find it shameful that surrounding these tragic events there has been salacious gossip, unwarranted personal attacks, and false misleading accusations on me – from people who are looking to be relevant and have an agenda,” she said in a statement released by the White House. “This time is solely about healing our country and its citizens. It should not be used for personal gain.”

The first lady asserted that “our Nation must heal in a civil manner” and that she “absolutely” condemns the insurrection, though she did not mention that her husband was the one who had encouraged his supporters to mob the Capitol, which led to six deaths.

In the U.S. and especially in the Midwest, the term is "godless socialist." They consider socialism to be intrinsically welded to atheism and a repudiation of god. Seriously.
Keep in mind there are four "Midwests", corresponding to when they were settled (reference: 9 nations of North America), each with a different cultural and political identity.

Has anyone even -said- anything about her in this mess?
I'm sure someone has, but it's been overshadowed by everything else... it just seems louder when it's YOU they are talking about... still, if she was wiser, she'd just have kept her mouth shut. Just because there exists a troll somewhere talking trash about you, doesn't mean you have to acknowledge it. she amplified those voices by responding.

Another one of those "I'm not racist!" racists, no doubt.

EDIT: Oopsies, not a current racist video...

That's so weird. I don't understand Trump's appeal in other countries. I hear he has a big following in Poland. Do foreigners not understand what, "America first!" means? I guess nationalism to a specific country is kind of a fluid thing to people of a certain ideological bent. I mean, we have American nazis, even though nazis were German nationalists, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. It just makes me scratch my head.

The people saying the terrorism at the capitol was antifa are seriously unhinged right now. Here's one example of how deep that goes...

I really think that in the US and in other countries the real reason people support Trump is this: Valuing male dominance may predict support for Trump, study says

Men and women who endorse "hegemonic masculinity" -- an idealized form of manhood where White, heterosexual men have power, status and dominance over women, gay men, men with disabilities, racial or religious minorities and other groups -- are more likely to be supporters for US President Donald Trump than those who don't embrace dominant masculinity, according to new research.

"What this work shows is that masculinity is not just an ideology that men strive to achieve. It's something we value as a culture," said lead author Theresa Vescio, a professor of psychology and women's, gender and sexuality studies at Pennsylvania State University.

"The beauty of masculinity as cultural ideology is we can get women to participate in it and endorse it, even though it's subordinating them. We can get men of color, low socioeconomic status men, gay men to endorse it even though it's implicitly subordinating," Vescio said.

Man Arrested in Capitol Siege Asked God For Guidance First: “I Never Heard a No”

Anyway, it was this next passage that stood out to me because it’s clear Sweet’s faith played a role in his crime. He literally asked God for guidance and it went exactly as you’d expect:

He says he hesitated. He says he felt the need to go inside to share his views with Congress but wanted to consult God first. He prayed aloud: “Lord, is this the right thing to do? Is this what I need to do?” He says he felt God’s hand on his back, pushing him forward.
“I checked with the Lord,” he says. “I checked with Him three times. I never heard a ‘No.’”

That's what I'm sitting here wondering after reading that.

I mean, on Twitter there were people joking about her anti-cyberbullying campaign working when Trump was banned from the service, but that can't be what she's talking about.

Right now, I'm horribly disappointed in a friend for equating this with freedom of speech; in part because he is a fucking lawyer and ought to know better.

but trying to hold my cool because it feels like when any other time a friend is in a bad relationship and you just wait for them to reach that conclusion and be there for them.

Yes. Can confirm, if you're carrying your cell phone and both the battery and SIM card are inserted and the battery isn't flat, you're constantly broadcasting your location and, given a warrant, a skilled analyst and sufficient time, law enforcement can use that to track your movements pretty accurately.

How accurately depends on where you are -- if you're simply driving down the road in open countryside, they might be able to place you to within 30 miles or so, but in a city, it's much closer, and somewhere like the Capitol Building you can be sure it'll be a matter of yards.

It'll take a long time to analyse all the records, and then cross-reference them with all the rest of the phone's movements and activity that day, but certainly everyone unlawfully inside the Capitol Building that day can expect a knock on the door sooner or later.

It will take time, as I say, because you need expensive human analysts to produce something investigators and lawyers can use, so it's not something Law Enforcement do just to be nosy, but they'll get there.

ETA: It occurs to me that this is the sort of thing AI could do pretty well -- it's all more or less straightforward calculations, but there are so damn many of them. AI could at least do most of the work for the analyst, though, who could then concentrate on key points of detail. And, of course, you need the analyst to explain and justify the results to the jury, since "our algorithm says so" won't be sufficient.
