Georgia GOP called "shameless" for trying to use new voting law to oust local election officials

Gov. Brian Kemp earlier this year signed SB 202, a law that not only restricts ballot access but allows state officials to temporarily take over county election boards. This has raised concerns about potential Republican election subversion after the party lost the presidential race and both U.S. Senate elections in the state amid record voter turnout. Republican lawmakers wasted no time using the law to target election officials in Fulton County, which includes most of of the city of Atlanta and has a population of more than a million people, about 44% of them Black. President Biden won 72.6% of the vote in Fulton County, outperforming Hillary Clinton's 2016 total by 83,000 votes. The county has been the a primary target of former President Donald Trump's false election claims and multiple lawsuits filed by his supporters, although there has been no evidence of fraud or misconduct.

Republicans representing the county in the state legislature called for a performance review of the country's election board in July, which Scott Hogan, the head of the state Democratic Party, decried as a "shameless Republican power grab designed to suppress voters and inject partisan politics into our elections."

Are there 80 million federal workers, or did he just pull that number out of his 🍑 based loosely on the number of Biden voters? Because the only number I could find was higher.

There's about 4 million federal civil service and military. There are a considerably larger number of government contractors, who are also covered by the plan. So are everyone receiving Medicare and Medicaid payments (i.e. the whole healthcare industry). A considerable fraction of all those people are already vaccinated.

“Stand against (insert lie or Faux outrage here)” is common right wing language, but since 1/6, it sounds like a call for another insurrection, especially from him.
I’m also wondering if this is timed to gin up the base ahead of Saturday’s planned “peaceful rally”.

If I properly understand this article, and if the figures are correct, of course, the various federal vaccine mandates cover about 100 million people, and there are about 80 million unvaccinated Americans, still, some of whom must be covered by the mandates. No one is quite sure how many of the 100 million people potentially affected by the mandate are currently unvaccinated, but presumably it's a not-insignificant number.

The point is that Biden is trying to save people's lives and quality of life. This should not be something to stand against. Even if they don't believe the virus exists, or that it's a bioweapon, or that survival is always the same thing as recovery, the virus doesn't care about any of that.
And the people sending out this revolting (in more ways than one)"call to arms" know that. They are vaccinated.
The people that buy into this ,if they end up with long COVID, or some resultant serious health issues -- if they think the Trumpliban is going to give a damn about them if they get back into power, and have their backs, they will be in for a shock.

Oh, I agree. Trump and the other Republicans who're busy turning vaccination into as much a culture war issue as they made masks are behaving reprehensibly.

I was just trying to explain where the figure seemed to come from.

This politicisation of vaccination, and the attempt to frame President Biden's various mandates as "federal overreach," seems to me both dishonest and unnecessary since any concerns about the state infringing on the various rights of the individual (I certainly would have some misgivings about aspects of the mandate, were I American) can, and doubtless will, be well protected by existing US law and procedure.

The actual implementation of the mandate, it seems to me, will have to be in line with existing law on the circumstances in which a person may lawfully refuse to be vaccinated, as well as the (logically far broader) conditions under which it may attempt to compel them to be vaccinated in the first place.

President Biden must have some legal basis for issuing the mandates, so there's the question of whether the circumstances apply under which he may lawfully issue particular instructions (I'm assuming something gives him the power to do pretty much anything in a health emergency like this), so the courts will properly be asked if what he's doing is, in fact, lawful.

Compelling people to be vaccinated is a pretty extreme step, and I think it's only right that the courts confirm that the circumstances are so severe that these particular measures are justified as the least oppressive way of ensuring public health by combatting the spread of the virus.

But that shouldn't be a political issue.

This is why we should have laws and courts and human rights lawyers, and not populist demagogues.

A lot of the American laws compelling public health measures were pulmagated subsequent to the Flu epidemic in World War 1, and probably could stand some investigation given the era's disregard for civil rights, privacy, acts of conscious, etc. I also believe the anti-maskers and anti-vaccine opinion leaders should also be heavily investigated and bought up on charges, if appropriate, as well as new laws written to sanction their behavior.

Don't we already have laws about shouting "Fire" in a crowded theater? This would be equivalent, I suppose.

Yes, Biden's mandate has a legal basis.

However, mandatory whole population vaccination has been held in the past to be a state-level issue. That's why Biden's plan doesn't include it, aside from political reasons. Employer mandates are legal, under their ability to set working conditions for their employees. Any mandates likely need exceptions for medical and religious reasons to be legal.

Wait what? Since when does Medicaid pay out any cash to patients or am I reading that wrong? asks the person who has been on it for the past 5 years.
To the doctors and hospitals.
