I'm curious why you laughed, Free. Was it at the idea of Cawthorn taking up arms when he can't move his legs? He might not be able to pay soldier, unless he had an AR-15 mounted on his wheelchair, but it's still stochastic terrorism, which isn't at all funny.
It can't have been at the idea that a member of Congress should have to even consider wearing a bullet -proof vest to protect himself against a fellow Congressman, because that's either terrifying, sad, or both.

It's for his claim the insurrectionists are political prisoners. The claim is as specious as the reasons they attempted the illegal efforts that got them locked up in the first place.

And even if he was Steve Rogers physically, as a congressman, there's little he can do to "bust them out jail."

I didn’t think the worst of you, I just didn’t understand.
You see, I don’t find that part funny either. From his and the MAGAs warped POV, they are political prisoners, and they are the real Americans, and the rest of us are either traitors or “sheeple”. It doesn’t matter how absurd it is, in their world it is an absolute truth, and the reason it isn’t funny is because it’s quite possible that they’ll act on it, violently, which seems to be what he’s trying to get them to do.
So I just find it scary.

You're right, it is not funny.
But the country that thinks very highly of itself when it comes to democracy and moral standards makes itself sometimes really laughed at with their political ideas and decisions. Especially the Republican and the evangelical part of the USA most of the times.

I used to think that the rest of the world,at least a good portion of it, was discerning enough not to conflate all of us with the worst of us. When my friends began to travel, I learned this wasn't so. I went to great lengths not to look or act "American", and let my British friends do the talking whenever possible. And this was because of friends 'experiences during the Reagan era.
TFG makes RR look like a paragon,and I was terrified of the reaction my friends and I works very when we went to England in 2017.
Fortunately by then, if course, there was social media, and most Britons sympathized, especially because of Brexit and Theresa May (at the time).
So I thought the rest of the world was again past judging us by our worst.

I laugh, because while history does not repeat itself, it does rhyme - and it is constantly rhyming with this bunch. Nearly everything they do, I can pull out two or three similar historical examples and smile at the similes, how idiotic and phantastically they compare.
