In the wake of the Minneapolis Catholic church shooting, senior Justice Department officials are weighing proposals to limit transgender people’s right to possess firearms, according to two officials familiar with the internal discussions.

The talks, described as preliminary in nature, appear to build on an idea that has gained some currency in conservative media since the Minneapolis shooting that killed two children and injured 21, most of them children, at Annunciation Catholic Church, an attack that police say was carried out by a 23-year-old transgender woman.

Such a move would represent a dramatic escalation of the Trump administration’s fight against the rights of transgender Americans.

Nothin' new here. There was a sudden burst of Republican concern regarding gun control -- and actual legislation passed! -- following a lot of pictures of Black Panthers like these:

I have been saying for some time now that it is only a matter of time before the Reich declares a national state of emergency and "temporarily" seizes a lot of firearms. It is what authoritarian governments do. "For safety," you know?

On a slightly more sane note, how in the name of Ru Paul do you suppose they plan to enforce this proposed ban? Is a quick genital check going to become part of going to a gun store? What about gun shows?

The Mass Shooters Are Performing for One Another (archive.today)

Last week, a 23-year-old opened fire outside a church at a Minneapolis Catholic school, killing two children and injuring 19 other people before dying by suicide. Just a few hours later, the shooter’s YouTube videos began to circulate online. In one, the shooter shows off an arsenal of weapons and ammunition laid out on a bed. The killer laughs and offers a stream-of-consciousness monologue. “I didn’t ask for life,” they say, the camera focused on the shooter’s vape. “You didn’t ask for death.”

The video generated a lot of attention, in large part due to the images and phrases that the shooter had inscribed on guns and magazine cases: racial slurs, random expletives, and the names of at least 13 other killers. There were references to Waco and Ruby Ridge as well as BlackRock and ExxonMobil. One of the guns says Release the files! An ammo magazine is scrawled with kill Donald Trump; another says I’m the woker, baby, why so queerious. There are multiple references to memes: Popular phrases like skibidi appear, as does “Lenny Face”—( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)—and an extremely niche allusion to a web comic from 2008. Taken together, the messages are incoherent. This is irony-poisoned nihilism, tactical gear as shitposting—the only cause this person seems to have is to troll the viewer.

And it worked. The video was picked apart by people looking for some hints as to the shooter’s motivation or politics. Some right-wing influencers and MAGA-friendly news outlets seized on the killer’s gender identity, insinuating that the shooting had something to do with them being trans. Others fixated on the message about killing Trump and suggested the killer was a deranged liberal. Some left-leaning commentators seized upon the anti-Semitic scrawlings and racial slurs and said the killer was clearly a neo-Nazi.

But the rush to make sense of the shooting based on these messages and symbols is misguided. As incoherent, unhinged, or even cringey as the Minneapolis shooter’s videos might seem, they are part of a familiar template of terroristic behavior—one that continues to spread in online communities dedicated to mass shootings and other forms of brutality. In these morbid spaces, killers are viewed as martyrs, and they’re dubbed “saints.” Really, they’re influencers.

DeSantis announces 'Second Amendment' tax holiday, renews push for open carry of guns

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis stood in front of a scowling grizzly bear with its claws extended — a deceased and stuffed one, that is.

Hunters will not find any grizzlies to shoot in Florida, though the state’s wildlife agency has approved a hunt in December for its closest relative here, the Florida black bear.

A midshipman sheltering in place mistook an officer as a threat and was shot by law enforcement amid an investigation into a threat against the U.S. Naval Academy.

It all started around 5 p.m. Thursday when the academy locked down out of an abundance of caution amid anonymous threats made by a midshipman who was thrown out of the academy, NBC News reported.

The threats were made through social media using an IP address masked to appear as if the sender was on campus, NBC News reported.

Amid a shelter-in-place order and while Naval Security Forces were clearing a building, a midshipman mistook a member of law enforcement as a threat and hit him using a training weapon, NBC News reported. Law enforcement then shot the midshipman, who was flown by Maryland State Police medevac helicopter to a hospital, where he is stable.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m., Gov. Wes Moore's office sent a statement to 11 News, saying there is no credible threat to the U.S. Naval Academy.

‘Radicalized’ Evergreen High School shooter appeared to hold antisemitic, violent views in online accounts

Social media accounts that appear to be connected to the 16-year-old shooter are littered with references to mass shootings and antisemitic views, The Denver Post found.

The 16-year-old boy who shot two students and then himself at Evergreen High School this week appeared to espouse white supremacist views online and showed an interest in mass shooters in the days before the attack.

Social media accounts that appear to be connected to shooter Desmond Holly are littered with references to mass shootings and antisemitic views, The Denver Post found.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Jacki Kelley on Thursday said Desmond had been “radicalized through an extremist network,” but declined to offer any additional details. The public accounts offer some insight into what that radicalization might have included.

In one photo posted on TikTok five days ago, Desmond appears to be wearing a black T-shirt with the word “Wrath” written in red across the chest — similar to what one of the attackers wore in the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School, also in Jefferson County. The same post also includes an image of the 15-year-old who killed two people and injured six more at a Madison, Wisconsin, school in December.

Michigan mom says 11-year-old son was expelled after dismantling classmate's loaded gun at school

The incident happened in May at Dwight Rich School of the Arts in Lansing after a student allegedly brought a loaded gun to school.

Savitra McClurkin said she has been trying to enroll her son, Sakir Everett, into another school ever since he was abruptly kicked out of Dwight Rich School of the Arts in Lansing in May.

"I'm upset with everybody," McClurkin said in a phone interview Monday. "I'm not just mad at the district, I'm mad at some of these teachers, administrators, as well as the city, because they did not handle this right."

The incident happened after an unidentified student allegedly brought a loaded gun to the middle school. McClurkin said the student pulled out the gun in a bathroom and "gave my son a firearm."

"Like here, take this, hold on to this," she said.

Sakir, who knows how to hunt and learned about gun safety from his godfather, knew the weapon was not allowed in school.

"Sakir's natural reaction was there's no way I'm going to hold on to this gun all day," his mother said. "He proceeded to go to class ... and dismantled it in class. There was a teacher in class and everything. People were around and everything."

After her son took the gun apart, McClurkin said, he "put it inside of a heater" in the classroom and threw the bullets in a garbage can.

"He didn't want it on his person, but he didn't want nobody to mess with it," she said about why her son dismantled the firearm.

I guess Sakir didn't want to turn in someone who might be a friend. The school handled things in the thoughtless, reactionary way I would expect.

In Texas, about 12.15am on Sunday, two people died and five more were injured in a shooting at the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle casino in Eagle Pass, near the US-Mexico border, the local news outlet KSAT reported.


Law enforcement early on Sunday was searching for a suspect in the casino shooting, the local county government’s top official, Ramsey English Cantú, said to KSAT. Authorities did not immediately discuss a possible motive in that shooting.

In a separate statement on Facebook, English Cantú said: “More than anything, I ask that we come together to pray for the families of the two victims whose lives were tragically lost in this heinous act.”

Meanwhile, in New Orleans, on the first block of Bourbon Street, the well-known entertainment thoroughfare, a triple shooting killed one woman, wounded two other women and injured a man, local police said. According to Guardian reporting partner WWL Louisiana, the slain woman was pronounced dead at the scene while the other three who were wounded were taken to a hospital.

New Orleans police did not immediately publicly identify a suspect or discuss a possible motive.

As of Sunday, the 271st day of 2025, there had been more than 320 mass shootings in the US, according to the non-partisan Gun Violence Archive.
