I'm not sad Colt Gray is alive. I'm sad that Tamir Rice isn't.
I did read today that Colt Gray has been begging for mental health help for months, and nobody did anything. His family was apparently known and had past involvement with Child Protective Services. His aunt said he had "a difficult home-life." If this is true then his parents, the CPS worker, and all those who failed to get help for this kid - and yes, he is a kid - should face charges. The parents should especially face charges if it turns out the gun belonged to them. This child's life and the lives of his victims are over because the adults in this boy's life had their heads up their asses.
And I"m sorrry - I'm against trying a 14 year old as an adult. The best thing that could happen would be for him to be found not guilty by reason of insanity, so he could be held beyond his 21st birthday. Their should be an intermediate level - where no you're not an adult, but you are old enough to do real time if you do something like that - like maybe he couldn't be sentenced to more than 30 years. I know he can't be sentenced to life without possibility of parole.
