Illinois recently got rid of bail, basically for this reason.

I am surprised it passed, because good god the misinformation. The opposition was basically suggesting this meant that every criminal will just be released back into society until trial.

Its basically some sort of Judicial discretion and people who are a threat to people or themselves, still go to jail until trial. It just is no longer pay to win to get back out.
