Labor and lumber were relatively cheap a century ago. Also homes were smaller. The one I linked to was about 800 square feet, and the second floor were truncated rooms due to the roof line.
And you had to provide a cleared site. The land itself and site prep is a significant part of the total price of a home.

What is a Sears catalog?
It's an iconic part of American history, especially in the relatively under-developed rural areas in the late 19th to mid 20th century. You might want to check Wikipedia or YouTube for more info especially regarding its cultural impact.

Honestly, sometimes I think I'd like to live on a little sailboat, small enough for me to handle by myself, and spend just days and days on the ocean. Every once in a while I'd put in at some random little country for a day or two to replenish my food and get filled in on how badly the world is burning before quietly moving along but otherwise it's just me. I'll have a radio so once in a while I can chat with and check up on other people who are doing the same thing, to make sure we're all doing all right.

Well when I'm as rich as Elon Musk I'm going to buy the entire state of Montanta (or Wyoming) put a house in the middle of it and be like nobody can come in here, and have food air lifted in.

With Elon Musk money you won't need air lifting. Just build tunnels.

I love big windows (strangely, I don't like glass furniture). An inner courtyard would be a dream.

These are a tad grandiose but you get the idea. Lots of light and foliage.

The house that I had in SoCal about 30 years ago had a beautiful atrium. It was in the center of the house and the living room, hall and bedroom were all built around it so that you could see it from those view points. I had ivy, flowers and a Japanese Maple in it. The ex kept wanting to enclose it and just make it into another room, I sure hope that who ever bought the house hasn't done that.
