Whatever they say about Carter's early policies, the man refused to join his local White Citizen's Council in the wake of Brown v Board of Education. That brought the real possibility that his store (a seed store was part of the farm operation, a position that brought status in farming communities) would mysteriously burn down. Possibly with him in it. It was not an uncommon occurrence at the time. It is also worth noting that the liberal Baptist churches were important at the time in organizing Civil Rights work.

Whatever the case, I don't think Carter represents a template for modern Southern Democrats with an interest at shooting for the presidency.

However, that's not to say they can't. Or shouldn't.

Was also thinking about who we run as Democrats. Perhaps we should consider a southerner as we did with Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. Jimmy Carter took Texas, of all places.

As of this morning Pres. Trump was leading but under 50% in Georgia, and it is looking more likely that there may be a runoff for the presidential race in Georgia. We are going to need to put a statue of Stacey Abrams at Stone Mountain. Also, this just came across my feed:


Georgia is about to get even more inundated with money and political ads. There may be a runoff for both Senate seats and the presidency. I was hoping to be able to go back to watching the news again.... I may need to make a run to the liquor store.

Funny that you mentioned Eminem. I had dark thoughts about those all-white people trying to stop the count in Detroit. These people were largely the white-flighters, no doubt. That thought was, "Send in Eminem and his posse" to protect the vote, being that he is a native Detroiter.

I kinda agree with this, but...

According to a piece I read several years ago, Jimmy Carter believes abortion is wrong except under certain conditions (rape, incest, danger to mother's life), and yet allowed policy to conflict with his own religious or moral ones. So in a lot of ways he was fairly progressive, especially for a Georgian Dem in the 70s.

Castro and O'Rourke were successful at running for and holding lesser positions in locations- Castro as Mayor of San Antonio, O'Rourke as Congressperson for Texas' 16th - that have largely liberal constituencies.

Carter as governor of Georgia...well, I just looked up a few things about his early political career. He won a seat on the Georgia State Senate in 1962 and was reelected in '64, but his first run for the governorship failed. Then he became a born-again Baptist. One might suspect this aided him in his second run at governor in a bible belt state. Also, the platform he ran on was not something you might call progressive (Britannica states he "tacitly adhered to a segregationist approach"). However, once in office his policies lead to him appearing on the cover of Time magazine, and talk of his being part of "the new South." He didn't run for a second term, instead announcing his candidacy for President.

So I wonder how effective a model Carter is for today's Democrats.

I guess we won't really have a good idea what the model for today should be until a Southern Democrat runs and wins. In the mean time...cultivate our team? That means continuing to stick to a 50 state strategy. With no let up!

And, what do we do if it went red? That means Trump only would need Arizona, which may well still be up in the air.

We are going to have to be VERY careful to not count our chickens, or celebrate prematurely.

That doesn't even count all of the fuckery Trump is going to commit via the courts.

I'm hopeful, but scared and cautious too. It didn't have to come to this, but it did.

We should have run Sherrod Brown. He speaks blue collar fluently and won Ohio with a focus on healthcare and protecting pensions.

Perhaps in a more normal year, but Sherrod Brown just isn't that well known, which would have been a severe handicap during a pandemic when getting out and meeting people and holding large rallies wasn't possible. For all that I'm lukewarm about Biden, he was well-known and generally liked. He didn't have to fight that part of the battle because 8 years in the Obama administration had banked that good-will already. Brown might have helped in Ohio, but I'm not persuaded his appeal would be broad enough to outperform Biden.

A Georgia judge has dismissed the Trump campaign’s lawsuit over absentee ballots in the state.
The president’s reelection campaign tried to argue election officials were attempting to count invalid ballots in Georgia.
When pressed for evidence of that claim, the Trump campaign could not produce any.
The president’s campaign is trying to launch legal challenges in multiple battleground states, but they do not seem to have much merit at this point.

Pre-election I saw news stories about Dem's outspending Trump's campaign. Pffft. FOX donated so much air time to Trump that those numbers are at minimum highly suspect.
