The US has been here before, and came back from it.

Out of control federal agents invading the nation’s cities and kidnapping people en masse, a president and his cronies fomenting public anger and fear of immigrants, and dissent suddenly declared to be an illegal threat to national security.

All of that is happening now. But it also happened in 1919, at the height of what came to be called the first Red Scare, when a young J. Edgar Hoover and his new federal police force led a crackdown on dissent, focused on “radical” Americans born abroad.

Anduril and Palantir battlefield communication system has deep flaws, Army memo says

WASHINGTON, Oct 3 (Reuters) - The much-needed modernization of the U.S. Army's battlefield communications network being undertaken by Anduril, Palantir and others is rife with "fundamental security" problems and vulnerabilities, and should be treated as a "very high risk," according to a recent internal Army memo.

The two Silicon Valley companies, led by allies of U.S. President Donald Trump, have gained access to the Pentagon's lucrative flow of contracts on the promise of quickly providing less expensive and more sophisticated weapons than the Pentagon's longstanding arms providers.
But the September memo from the Army's chief technology officer about the NGC2 platform that connects soldiers, sensors, vehicles and commanders with real-time data paints a bleak picture of the initial product.

"We cannot control who sees what, we cannot see what users are doing, and we cannot verify that the software itself is secure," the memo says.
Palantir and Anduril did not comment for this story.

Him or not, I'm not sure it makes any difference theses days.
Well, he hasn't been seen in public since Tuesday, which indicates another health-related incident - like him being dead.

It may be he has not been in public because he keeps undermining Republican efforts to blame Democrats for the shutdown.

What the hell is with these people and their Lord of the Rings obsession? I've loved that book since I was 10 and they are going to ruin it for me.
A lot of people, on both the left and the right, see Tolkien's vision of a hierarchical and conservative world, based on traditional myths, depicting a strongly gendered and racially determined society where everyone knows their place and sticks to it, as very close to fascism. The Italian fascists in particular are very fond of Tolkein.

Though I wonder what the tech-bro transhumanist billionaires make of Sauron manufacturing orcs. Isn't that transhumanism in practice?

Also Tolkien's deeply anti-industrialist view. Aren't they irked by that?

I think Tolkien was clearly very socially conservative but there is a long history of social conservatives not being so thrilled about big corporations taking control of everything. I'd argue that Regan and Thatcher were instrumental in convincing conservatives that big capital was their friend. It's hard to speculate on how Tolkien would view modern politics since his positions don't line up well with modern issues. But I think socially conservative and fiscally left is a reasonable, vague bet.

Yeah, Tokein wrote an entire Fantasy epic and world that has like, 2 meaningful women characters. I feel like his worldview was probably not particularly progressive. But then, it was the early 1900s.

Yeah.... I doubt he'd see eye to eye with us about LGBT+ or various other issues, but I bet he'd also find Trump to be very gross as many proper British conservatives do. This is of course very deep speculation since it's hard to impose modern politics on historical figures or vice versa.

Marrying outside your race is also a very big deal in LOTR -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arwen

"Socially conservative and fiscally left" also describes a great many supporters of Nigel Farage's Reform Party, though not, of course, its leadership, who are fiscally right-wing as well.
