I've been looking at Costa Rica and Belize, but it turns out there are some affordable places up in BC -- just not in Vancouver. I'd be out in the sticks, like Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. Or maybe inland -- I'm not sure at what point BC turns into West Alberta, but somewhere west of that transition if possible. Even Victoria has some "not-too-ugly" homes I could afford, especially if I rent out the US home. If I was just over the border, I'd still have a shot at occasionally seeing at least a couple of the grandkids, too, which definitely has huge appeal.
Now I need to do a deep dive into how long I'd be able to stay. Typically, you can stay x amount of time as a visitor then you have to spend x amount of time in some other country before you can come back. The question becomes, "which other country?" Sure as hell not this one. Mexico comes immediately to mind, but god knows what's going to happen with our diplomatic relations with them. Then there's the sometimes complicated question of the cats...
Happily, all I need to make a living is decent internet service.
I'm about 75% sure I'm going to need to GTFO. For one thing, there are at least two extended family members who will happily rat me out to whatever authorities are going to be tracking enemies of the state. ("For Jesus.") My only hope is that the ruling junta is going to be rendered less effective by what will inevitably be a vicious power struggle, especially when Trump "goes off to join the choir invisible." I expect that to be sooner rather than later as it seems to me he will shortly become more trouble than he is worth. I'll be mildly surprised if he makes it to the inauguration. The sort of mild surprise one experiences when a random fart drifts past one's nose in a setting without an easy escape.
Dammit, I'm too old for this shit.
