That's a weird link... it is mostly about Holmes, but then at the bottom talks about a few different things. I agree with the part about how American culture isn't like the Taliban and has always been sexist.

I've also long cringed when I read about Holmes. I thought it was always really obvious that she was a fraud... and I always thought she was setting a terrible example for other women. I do appreciate how the article points out that men aren't blamed when other men are frauds. And men seem more likely to get away with being a known fraud for longer. Like Elon Musk!

Her defense is interesting... I'd not be surprised if her and her boyfriend were both in on it and now trying to blame each other... But I can still feel sorry for her if there is any evidence of what she says.

Arwa Mahdawi is one of The Guardian's regular US columnists and, like several of their other regular contributors, she does occasional Saturday columns covering a number of topics. I particularly liked her observation that the US fundamentalists are a home-grown problem, and dismissing them as something foreign to the US is a mistake.

I mean, as I understand it, Judge Gamble's ruling delays the law's introduction for a week, until she's heard arguments on Monday September 13, at which point she'll doubtless be persuaded to extend the injunction for as long as it takes for one side or the other to appeal her decision, and then it'll be extended again while one side or the other appeals the superior court's decision, and so on while the whole thing slowly makes its way back to the Supreme Court.

I could well be mistaken, though -- I really don't understand the US process.

Well, I mean a major victory would be having the entire law squashed by SCOTUS. But this is a baby step that will hopefully get us there.

As someone who lives in Texas, I am appaled by this. I used to be right-leaning and now I am pretty left. I think a lot of things my state does is fucking stupid. This is probably the dumbest in recent history.

I don't think any man should be telling a woman what they can or cannot do with their body. I wouldn't want a woman telling me what I can and cannot do with my dingaling.

This only prevents one specific group from suing planned Parenthood.

Anyone else can still sue them. And the anti-choice group can still sue other parties. So it has no real impact at this time. There may be a more extensive order after the hearing.

Would another Texas court agree to hear a case that turned on a constitutional point that was already being litigated? Don't all these multiple cases get joined very early on, since none of them can proceed until the basic question of constitutionality is settled?

At some point soon, yes. But right now, this is only limited to the two parties in the suit. If another party sued Planned Parenthood, it is not clear that the suits would be joined since each has a different set of legal arguments even though both hinge on the same underlying law. It is also possible that there will be a broader stay after the oral arguments are heard and this suit will become the test case for the law. Given the elected judges in Texas, there is also the possibility that another court will try to undermine the stay or further limit it's scope.

I really don't expect this to end in Texas, as once it is done in the state courts they can appeal on Federal Constitutional grounds. Texas is in the most conservative Federal circuit, and the Supreme Court sent a strong signal that they may be looking for a case to overturn Roe v Wade, and this is the circuit most likely to give it to them.
