On the other hand, I can see why the Washington Post are furious with her, though it might have been far better, and also far more humane, to put her on paid leave until the fuss dies down, with a strong recommendation she stays low for a few days and gets out of town for her own safety after the threats she's been receiving.
It was my impression that "paid leave" describes what she's on right now?

Yes, I phrased it badly.

Rather, they should have put to one side their perfectly understandable desire to sack her on the spot, and concentrated on helping her through the appalling situation she's brought upon herself, so simply tell her she's on leave and they'll handle the media for the time being, but she should stay low, stay off social media, and concentrate on keeping herself safe, with support from them.

Then, when the crisis is over, they decide on her future.

Getting involved in a public discussion about firing her when the poor woman has the twitter mob after her and is receiving all manner of threats helps no one and makes even worse for her the terrible situation in which she finds herself before of a catastrophic misjudgment.

You don't need to spend so much time trying to prove Facebook is malignant; neither one of us disputes that. The point of contention is Google.
I know that's where you want to limit the argument, but we don't have the option of an imaginary enthusiastically good alternate megacorporation, we have to deal with the ones that exist.

Ah, I didn't realize they were talking about firing her. I had figured she was just going to be on this suspension temporarily and then go back to work at some point.

It's definitely true that they need to be vocally supporting her against all of the threats of violence.

I see her union is supporting her.

I feel sorry for her at one level, since -- to my mind, at least -- she made a catastrophic error of judgement in choosing to retweet the piece, but what's descended on her head as a result is surely disproportionate.

On the other hand, I can see why the Washington Post are furious with her, though it might have been far better, and also far more humane, to put her on paid leave until the fuss dies down, with a strong recommendation she stays low for a few days and gets out of town for her own safety after the threats she's been receiving.

Then, when everyone has had a chance to take stock once the immediate furore has died down, they could tell her, if it then still seemed appropriate, that they wanted her resignation for dropping them in like that, without warning anyone.
I think her union is right.

She didn’t even write an article, just linked to one that was already easily and publicly available. It’s far from the only tweet that came out on the subject after the death.

Publishing names of emails is a different thing. If there’s a corporate policy in place about this already, it’s fair to ask employees to adhere to it. But I don’t see that the union is referring to such a policy.

The union is right to be concerned about leaving someone unprotected in the face of threats.

Not heard of this in the UK before, but it seems "tradwives" have been a thing in the US for some time

Yeah, I can see why her editor, and the management generally, are furious with here -- I would be, in their position -- but her welfare has to come first.

They should have shelved any -- to my mind, well-deserved -- disciplinary proceedings and concentrated on supporting and protecting her.

Anything else can wait until the current furore is over and things have quietened down.

Sounds like the same old people, now with social media. I doubt there are many who are not churchgoers of some kind. If they have enough money to not work it should be easy to get a computer.

Plenty of people stay at home to take care of a dependent without making it into a claim of moral superiority.

Yeah it's a white nationalist thing and I'm glad the article calls that out. There's been this campaign over the last couple of years by nazi-types to try and popularize and/or normalize bits and pieces of white nationalist culture while obscuring or obfuscating its actual origins.

I had actually never heard that term before. Maybe that's a good thing, for so many reasons.

Narrator Voice: Katheryne would have kicked the bastard between the knees at the altar upon hearing the changes to the vows.

"First, although the Holocaust was an absolute tragedy, around 6 million Jewish children were killed."

This is the worst opening sentence to an argument I think I've ever read. I mean, holy f-word.

And that's without even getting to the part where he says it's good they died so they can spend more time with God. To say nothing of the part where he says if they lived they'd have been damned for eternity if they stayed Jewish.
Holy f-word indeed.

Yeah I didn't even look far enough to get into the meat of her argument.

Okay so, it's good they all died as children because if they had died as Jewish adults they would go to hell because they'd never heard of Jesus. But as children, they'd still never heard of Jesus, so how does killing them early keep them out of hell?
