I think I once read or heard on the radio somewhere that in America, specifically in Pennsylvania, where I am, the cemetery can resell a grave after 70 years, or something like that. In most of America, you can't resell grave plots. Whether you can or not, and the length of time you have to wait varies by state and municipality. IIRC, they said that the idea that your final resting place is yours until the heat death of the universe is kind of an American concept. In Europe, where they have less land for such extravagances, they have been reselling grave plots like this for centuries. America is only recently catching up to them in this regard. I do like the european approach to this. I mean, the dead don't care what we do with their carcasses, so why should it matter? We can't all matter enough to our survivors to get big memorials like Ozymandias.

The older cemeteries in Louisiana often have monuments or wall vaults where there is a shelf for one recent body and an open space beneath. After a year (to allow time for decomposition), the most recent body can be pushed back to fall into the vault beneath and a new body placed on the shelf. Most are family vaults, but some are for fraternal organizations or charities.

Prof Max Friedlaender was a distinguished musicologist who died in 1934. While his family were Jewish, he was a member of a German Protestant church (I'm not sure if he converted or if someone else had some generations ago) so he was buried in their burial ground. Had he not died when he did, though, the fact he attended a Protestant church would have been no protection when the Nazis came to power -- that's what I meant.

Back in 1980, the lease on the plot had expired and his remains were transferred, with the then family's agreement, to a more remote location, though a memorial to this distinguished historian of music still stands in the original location.

So far no problem.

However, by a horrible turn of fate 40 years later, the next person to be buried in that plot is this Holocaust-denier and neo-Nazi.

The article mentions that there were Jewish graves in the Protestant cemetery, that his family had requested a more central location, but there was a problem because it would be near those graves. So I was surprised there was any amount of Jewish graves in a cemetery of another religion.

Obviously I don't know how graveyards are operated in Germany but, based solely on that article, it sounds to me as if the church of which both Prof Friedlaender and late neo-Nazi were members is the leaseholder of a section of a larger burial ground, and the plots there are reserved for members of the church. Elsewhere in the same burial ground, it would appear there's a section of land similarly reserved for Jewish burials, and there are probably Catholic and Muslim sections too.

Certainly many graveyards in England have areas associated with particular faiths, sometimes because, when the graveyard was first opened, particular local burial societies (precursor to funeral insurance, I guess) had bought a lease on a particular sector, to be occupied by their members and their families.

I'm willing to bet that some enterprising publisher of school textbooks for the Texas State Board of Education is already in discussions with potential holocaust-denying authors, with a view to ensuring a balanced curriculum and healthy profits (as happened with "intelligent design").
