Jesus Christ. Why do I have to come across news like this?!

I'm not quoting any of the details of this guy's...activities from the article. As it notes:

The stuff they chose to publish is fucking horrible.
I didn't read it. I feel sick just thinking about it.

I thought it was all based on a chess puzzle. Then I realized their board only has kings, queens and pawns on it. Millions of pawns.

I think the only winning move in such a game is to shoot the kings and queens.
The traditional method involves an axe or axe-like instrument.

As I said in another thread, it's called "head of state" for a reason.

Vandals!

Police are investigating the deliberate felling of one of the UK's most iconic trees, which appears to have been cut down in an act of vandalism.

The landmark at Sycamore Gap, beside Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland, was apparently cut down overnight.

Northumberland National Park Authority officials believe the tree, known as Robin Hood's Tree, was "deliberately felled" and asked people to stay away.

Studies pointed out in the piece are from the 90's, but footnotes mention more recent studies with similar numbers. Basically, it's an ongoing and perennial problem, and not just in the U.S.

Teacher Accused of Raping Boy, 12, Rearrested While Out on Bond After Stalking, Harassing Victim: Police
A Tennessee teacher accused last month of raping a 12-year-old and inappropriately contacting young boys by playing video games with them has been rearrested after stalking and harassing a victim, said police, who further claim she told the boy “he would regret” going to the authorities.

On Thursday, police arrested Alissa McCommon, 38, at her Covington home and charged her with aggravated stalking, harassment and coercion of a witness, the Covington Police Department said in a statement.

And she's a mother! *boggles*

I really hope they have something on this guy beyond "knows how to make a wedge cut with a chainsaw." I don't know about that area of England, but here in the PNW, you'd be hard-pressed to find a landowner who didn't know how to do that -- and chainsaws are about as common as lawnmowers around here. Heck, I have a little electric one for trimming branches and such. When a big (like, 100-foot) cedar came crashing down in a friend's yard last year in a storm, so many people showed up with so many big chainsaws you'd literally risk life and limb walking through the yard!

My Oregon roots were showing when I first saw the photo and could tell it was done by a pro. It looks like a long bar and doesn't show any burns or ripping from cutting too slow or uneven. But in a rural county that won't narrow it down much.

I know only what I've read. He's been bailed and they removed a chainsaw from his premises for examination. For what it's worth, he's been in a long-standing dispute with his landlord (the Jesuit order) over his farm house and a court finally granted an eviction order shortly before the incident.

They won't be able to charge him without something better than "he's a local character with a chainsaw and a bad attitude," though. That wouldn't get past the Crown Prosecution Service's review process.

Surely they can do DNA analysis of the tree and the tree debris in his chainsaw's teeth?

It's possible, as far as I know, though I don't know if it's possible to connect the debris to a particular tree, as opposed to one of the same species in the same area. Presumably that's one things they'll be looking into as they examine hs chainsaw.

Probably easier to match the blade to the cut. Trace oil could also be a way to check.

The remaining 60% got divorced.
