I keep seeing duct taping stories like this, and it makes me wonder if there might be a better solution. I mean, I'm not that concerned for the passengers, because they usually deserve it, but, like...

DISCLAIMER: I hereby disavow all knowledge of my early 20s, which may or may not include my friends and I duct taping each other to chairs, telephone poles, motorcycles, toilets, walls, or ceilings, in various states of sobriety.

First problem: It's not easy to hold somebody down to duct tape them to a chair when they are struggling. It takes multiple people to do it, and the static chair would make it harder. It can't be easy to get multiple people around a cramped passenger chair in a plane, to grapple with a lunatic.

Second problem: Duct tape usually removes hair when it comes off, and that can cause bleeding. Also some people have allergic reactions to the adhesive. I don't really care too much about the comfort of these assholes, but hypothetically, if an unruly passenger gets Johnny Cochran to defend them, they might end up holding the airline liable for pain and suffering.

So maybe there should be a better restraint system? Maybe some kind of quick straps they can use that will minimize danger to crew and the passenger in question? I'm not saying we need to give the unruly passenger a private cell, like lock them in a high security first class cabin or anything like that. Just, maybe there should be a better solution at hand than duct tape. Maybe some kind of heavy canvass bag with straps, so you can throw it over their head and strap it down tight, like a crude straight jacket? It could even be built to attach to the chair.

The suspension of the crew issue has been "resolved" without further explanation.

Much simpler is a bungee cord around the chest, or an unattached version of the seat belts that are already in the plane.

If the morons who run olympic sports think this woman is a man because she runs too fast, they would probably think I'm a woman, because I run so slow, LOL Forget chromosomes, we can test your sex on the treadmill now!

I could not agree more.

Overall the Olympics have proven to be extremely sexist and transphobic.

First the uniforms: Why are some women still wearing skimpy uniforms at Olympics?
Earlier this month, the Norwegian beach handball team decided to wear shorts rather than bikini bottoms in the bronze medal game of the European Beach Volleyball Championship. The European Handball Federation fined the team for refusing to wear skimpier uniforms.

Exclusionary policies such as those preventing the participation of athletes like Semenya, Mboma, and Masilingi exhibit how institutions like the IOC reassert systems of patriarchy and white supremacy. “Bodies are often coded as appropriately ‘male’ or appropriately ‘female’ through a lens of racism and white supremacy,” wrote ACLU lawyer Chase Strangio in a May 2019 op-ed for NBC News. “And that lens is used to police some bodies in the alleged service of others.”

Well wait, though - Mboma was never made to take a gender-affirming test by the IOC and the person cited by this article as demanding it is just some rando former-runner from Poland who's upset because a woman beat his personal best time, not anybody involved with running the Games. His demand doesn't really weigh anything.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

According to the complaint, from 1999 to 2002 the plaintiff ran and participated in fan sites dedicated to SNL and Jimmy Fallon. SNL employees and cast members read these fan sites. I will repeat this: SNL's employees and cast members read these fan sites. In January 2000 Sanz and Fallon initiated contact with the plaintiff, then 15, by emailing her from an NBC email address. In October 2000, she and Sanz met after an SNL taping, where he "was flirtatious and physically affectionate with the then 15-year old Plaintiff by kissing her cheek and putting his hands on her waist." By spring of the next year, when she was 16, she was regularly coming to SNL afterparties, where she drank alcohol in the presence of cast members like Sanz, who was physically affectionate with her in the presence of other cast members and staff. During this period he also allegedly messaged her on AIM, soliciting "revealing photographs," discussing sexually explicit topics, and telling her not to tell anyone about their communications. Over time, the complaint alleges, these conversations grew increasingly sexual and controlling.
Nothing unusual about a 16 yo girl showing up at SNL afterparties. Apparently nothing at all.

:hellokitty:

History packets that claim “most slaves were generally treated kindly” in the United States and had “reasonable living conditions and hours of service” were pulled from the shelves of a Utah learning center this week.

Northridge Learning Center, a popular source of online classes and course packets for high school students across the state who need to make up credits, said it will no longer be distributing those materials and will rewrite the section on the Civil War.

“It is difficult to address a subject such as slavery, especially through an independent study packet versus classroom discussion,” said the center’s CEO, Alison D. Bond, in a statement to The Salt Lake Tribune that was also sent to parents. “But we see how this section can be improved.”

Right? HA HA HA!

A DC circuit court ruled that it's now legal for schools to electrotorture mentally disabled children. There were 3 judges: One appointed by Regan, one from Obama, and one from Trump. The Obama appointee objected to the court's decision. The Trump appointee was named Greg Katsas, and he was appointed by a single vote margin. That vote came from Joe Manchin.
