For profit healthcare strikes again. Why bother allowing a minimal preventive action, when you can force a delay and get the whole ICU engaged for a truly patient-bankrupting amount of financial damage for dramatic last second heroics?

But its not about that - its about being able to say 'She was dying, so we had to do the procedure' to cover their asses against the fascist government currently in control in Texas.

There is a real Conservative shit show going on around the story that 10yo girl.

There's some history here

Dr Caitlin Bernard testified last year, in a case involving abortion restrictions in Indiana, that she was forced to stop providing first-trimester abortions at a clinic in South Bend. She stopped the procedures after she was alerted by Planned Parenthood – who in turn had been alerted by the FBI – that a kidnapping threat had been made against her daughter.

I'm not talking about doctors and nurses, I'm talking about the hospital administrators and policy makers that oversee them.

But but but SPERM + OVUM = HUMAN BABY THAT MUST BE BORN AT ANY COST.
A woman in Texas was pulled over for driving alone in the HOV lane. She argued that since she is pregnant, that was two people, and shouldn't get a ticket. Do you get to deduct a fetus as a dependent on your taxes? If humanity begins at conception, can you start driving and voting 9 months earlier?

There's a lot of unforeseen consequences in these laws.

Do US states have criminal jurisdiction over acts done in other states, or abroad, if those acts were lawful at the time and in the place where they were done?
Generally no, because that would open up an infinite can of worms because states have different criminal laws. But, for example, in the case of Trump calling GA Secretary of State Raffensperger to change the election results, the Fulton County, GA district attorney can prosecute it because one end of the call was in Georgia.

So in the case of a Texas woman, if making a call to schedule an abortion was illegal in Texas, she might be liable, even if the medical procedure happened elsewhere. So the safest course would be to leave the state before doing anything.

More troubling than the conservative bombardment, though, was the way the mainstream media joined in to cast doubt on the story: The Wall Street Journal declared it “too good to confirm,” while The Washington Post’s fact-checking columnist argued it would “have more solid grounding” if the rape was confirmed by law-enforcement or if someone was charged. (Only 5% of rapes result in an arrest.)
After an arrest was made on Wednesday, those who scrutinized the story doubled down on their previous skepticism, arguing there was no way to have known if the account was true without confirmation from state officials or police. The fact that the doctor who performed the girl’s abortion was on the record seemed to carry no weight, nor did widely-available statistics showing that most rapes go unreported, or the idea that an abused minor might have privacy protections in place.

It’s clear that traditional journalism—and male reporters, in particular—are not ready for the complicated stories that will come out of states where abortion is illegal. Consider The Washington Post’s fact-checking columnist Glenn Kessler, who defended his piece by calling the abortion provider an “activist on one side of the debate.” Why would a police officer’s account, or a state official’s, be more reliable than a doctor’s? Are we to believe that in a state where abortion is criminalized, law enforcement and government officials are objective?
The American system is not set up to believe women or girls—in fact, it’s designed to do just the opposite. Our experiences, especially those having to do with our bodies or sexual assault, are disbelieved, maligned, or relentlessly picked apart for ‘biases’. In a misogynist country, all women are suspect.

Just want to say that WSJ is owned by Murdoch....

Also, anyone under 16 [in most states, anyway, other than Tenn.] who is pregnant has legally been raped. And as someone who has been date raped as an adult - how much easier is it to manipulate a child like that.

So, saw this one today. Not only is this what this ruling has done now, but ...

So, for me, this was painful because I became clinically depressed [instead of bipolar] when instead of getting an iud removed to get pregnant, instead I had to have everything removed [except ovaries].

Hell, having my doctor order a pregnancy test when I cannot get pregnant would do it too.

Oh, and something that explains a lot, including, possibly, why I got turned down for a card that my husband then got accepted for, even though my credit rating is higher....

That package is basically like receiving an anonymous letter in the mail, with words and letters cut from a magazine or newspaper, spelling out "We ArE wAtchING yoU".
