The brutality is no longer due to just the cops, but also fascist "militiamen."

The police "complaint" identifies him as Kyle Rittenhouse of Antioch, Illinois:

An unusual achievement: So much tear gas has been used in Portland recently, that the city's officials fear it polluted the water.

You know they really fucked up something when an US governmental body complains about the envirnmental impact of whatever it is...

While there ARE asshat cops, a lot of them do worry about their armed "fans". So long as all they're doing is S&M (Stand & Model) they're willing to cut them some slack - and still will, but about strike 3 they will have to come down on them. This is strike 1. Nothing will happen, though until it becomes a trend.

Same thing happened in Minneapolis a few years back over a police shooting. Nightly protests at one of the police precincts by a couple dozen blacks for a few weeks. I wouldn't say everything was chill, but it rarely went beyond words. Then a neo-nazi kid and friends got stupid, did some shooting but no one was hurt IIRC, and the cops really went after that piece of white trash.

Yes, I remember that. It happened at the 4th Precinct, my precinct, after the Jamal Clark shooting. The protests were peaceful, then some neo-nazis came in toting their guns and pointing them at protesters. I don't remember the cops going after them part, though, but I may have missed that. Not long after they came in with bulldozers in the middle of the night and removed all of the protester's belongings.

You probably have that right. My memory there is a bit foggy, and your recollection sounds about right for the MPD. They probably classified the protest camp as an "attractive nuisence", giving themselves an excuse to get rid of it.

Something is going on in Minneapolis. A man shot himself dead, looting downtown, 5,000 national guard soldiers, still confused. Phone went crazy with a warning tone twice. Thought it was a storm.

Something crazy going on. Local stations are kare11, wcco, kstp, mpr for those interested in following. Twitters probably up too. It's far away so going to bed, way past my normal bedtime.

Yes, there was a shooting in the 9th/10th Street ramp (there was a murder in the 7th Street one the other day) and the suspect shot himself in the head at 8th/Nicollet, captured on camera, as the police closed in on him.

Someone in the crowd proclaimed that the police had shot him and it was on. There was destruction of property up and down Nicollet Mall, including Nordstrom's, Target, Saks, etc..Target was smart enough to lower their metal gates. More and more people poured into the downtown area via transit, some proclaiming a desire to "burn it all down."

The Mayor, having learned his lesson from the last time, called in the National Guard right away, or perhaps like last time it was all about protecting downtown interests and temporarily halted light rail.

A family member of mine was expressing concern for my safety as it was happening. I, of course, am a few miles from downtown and wasn't in any danger.

Tonight is crazy. I just watched the RNC, then turned to Colbert, like I always do after watching a convention, and he didn't watch the RNC. Instead of talking about the convention, he made one of the strongest arguments for defunding the police I've seen. He explicitly says we need to defund them. This is in direct contradiction of democratic party policies, and in contradiction of Biden. Then he had Pelosi on and she artfully agreed with him (she didn't really agree, she used lots of weasel words). Then I flip around the talking heads, and everybody is saying the Republicans didn't talk about Kenosha at all at the RNC. Everybody is saying that. It is just not true, though. I saw it. Pence and others talked about Kenosha. The Republicans are backing the blue, same as Biden. The Republicans are just doing it on a big stage. They even had the head of the national police union on the RNC to make the argument for the police.

It seems like this whole democratic side of back the blue is falling apart, finally. By tomorrow, the democrat pundits might smooth this over and get behind Biden again, but I hope they don't. I hope Biden changes his tune in a meaningful way. Not holding my breath, though. He is probably going to keep saying that he doesn't want to defund the police, Trump does.
