Thanks, I was on my tablet and couldn't post it. I will look up Mitchel & Webb; I remember the sketch.

“We all want the truth. We all want justice. But I humbly ask everyone to avoid rushing to judgment until the investigation is over,” Staley said. “Sadly, on social media, some people are demanding I take action without waiting for evidence. That’s irresponsible, and I won’t do it.”
Hypocritical - didn't that policeman Staley was, presumably, responsible for training do exactly that - "rush to judgement" and "take action without waiting for evidence" ?
Whatever way you look at it, it's clearly murder, but I won't hold my breath waiting for justice to happen...

We haven't been in this thread for a while but it's pretty obvious that police brutality hasn't stopped in any shape or form.

I read this and it made me want to scream. The officers who did this should be fired. Seriously.

In a nutshell:

Tom Perez called the local police non-emergency line to report his elderly father missing. Thirty-six hours later, Perez was on a psychiatric hold in a hospital, having been pressured into confessing he killed his dad and trying to take his own life.

His father was alive and there had been no murder.

No one told Perez. Instead, police continued investigating him, looking for a victim who did not exist.
When you’re threatening somebody by telling them that they’re going to have to pay up to a million dollars in restitution by not telling you what had occurred, telling them you’re going to have to euthanize their dog if you don’t confess – that is not edging closer to the line, that’s leaping over the line.
This is just sick. They were enjoying torturing this poor guy because they just kept on even after they found out his father was alive. In fact, they brought his father in and questioned him. They should all be fired but instead they were promoted.

Basically, if anyone you know and love is ever having a mental health crisis or you're afraid they are missing, don't call the cops. Find a way to handle it yourself.

That case you linked too is horrific and I hope we see justice for it but I'm worried we won't... But to your other point, cops are often very over utilized for cases they have no business being involved in even if we could 100% trust every cop in the country. Many people, especially conservative white people, act like the cops are their personal goon squad and will call the cops on people they just don't like because they are "suspicious" and other subjective reasons.

Makes me think of some of the "defund the police" plans that talked a lot about sending social workers for many situations that cops are often used for. Because yes, the case you linked to would have likely gone MUCH better if a social worker was sent instead of cops. I do think police will always have a place in society, but we over use them horribly.

This!

Contrary to what Republicans would like everyone to believe, when we call for defunding the police, we're not calling for disbanding police departments! We're calling for letting people who are specifically trained for it handle the mental health situations, and let police stick to law enforcement.

We have something here that is close to what you are both describing. It started as a pilot project in 2021, and is now offered 24/7 for a large part of the city. It has its critics, some wishing the funds would go directly into fixing the root causes, but all in all, it seems to be going well, receiving just recently, more funding.

As police chiefs go, I think ours, Fady Dagher, is pretty good. He’s relatively new (2023), and much more inclined to working with social organizations and such. He also recently ordered officers to remove thin blue line pins (replacing it with “in remembrance to our fallen comrades”).
The immersion training that Dagher introduced while chief of police in Longueuil saw officers spend time with community groups, out of uniform, where they were able to form bonds and familiarize themselves with social workers and other partners who frequently work alongside officers to respond to 911 calls.

However, Ted Rutland, an associate professor in the department of geography, urban planning and environment at Concordia University with expertise in policing issues, said it's inefficient and expensive to have officers performing the role of a social worker.

"Instead of doing what a lot of cities are doing and saying we need different kinds of responses to those calls, Fady wants to make the police department into a combination police force/social work operation," Rutland said.
