I've been feeling so sick. I know I need nutrition but haven't felt like eating. Then I remembered this place, Indiya in Collingswood NJ. They sell what they call lunch box specials. As their menu says, they all come with an entree plus vegetable soup (not pictured cause I ate it), navrattan korma, channa masala, basmati rice and rice pudding. I chose the chicken tikka makhani as my entree.

Everything about this is so good. Here is a picture but it is just with my crappy camera, bad photo skills and bad presentation on my stove, and partly eaten.

Ever read a local restaurant review and say no way in hell I am going to this place? It is rare around here. The reviews of a german restaurant around here are so atrocious. They say they have a mannequin dressed up with nazi memorabilia, some trump stuff too. By all accounts it is run down, cash only. To pick one review that doesn't even mention the political stuff,

Best of the Wurst try the The WURSTof the WURST place !! First we were a party of 8 and no where on the sign said cash only. When you go to a German restaurant you expect an environment that is German. Not blasting country music . After we were seated our party of 8 we still were not told about cash only. We went to order and they literally had nothing on the menu available. The cheeseburger tasted like bad meat and the gravy like it was from a can. Then we saw 2 cockroaches and the bathroom was overflowed toilet with poop and dirty floor.
Oh gawd.

If I walked in somewhere (other than a museum) and saw a mannequin dressed as a nazi (or any other nazi stuff) I'd turn right around and walk out. Same goes for Trump signs. The stuff is obviously there because this is what they believe in, so I'm out the door as quick as my old legs can take me.

When I lived in Fort Lauderdale, we had a German restaurant on the corner of SR84 and SW9th near my old house. One day four of us walked over to try it out. It was one of those places that had been there since sometime back in the 1960's. I'm big on supporting Mom & Pop restaurants and particularly, old places that have become Florida institutions. (I nearly cried when they closed "The Caves" restaurant. The Caves Restaurant and Lounge)

The German place was cluttered to the point of hardly being able to walk around with all the Florida tourist crap that they were selling near the bar. That should have been a clue, but we proceeded anyway. They were short on staff so the service was crap, the menu was ridiculously long, they were out of most of the items and the food was essentially poorly cooked and inedible. My friend returned her fish twice and then finally gave up and just left it. When we got home, I set out some snacks and a charcuterie board and we never went back again but we seriously wondered how they managed to stay in business as long as they had.

I live just below German Village in Columbus. There are several excellent German restaurants with zero NAZI decorations. And in one case cream puffs as big as your head. A little further we have a smokehouse run by the same family since the 1870s. We get ham for Christmas and Easter plus the best sausage and bacon.

I’ve always disliked cold pasta salad from lunch counters (you know, a sandwich and a side of your choice of salad) or ready made from the grocery store, etc. Just thought there was something mixed in that just tasted off to me. Rancid oil? Whatever, it’s just an evil taste. I figured maybe it was my own tastebuds that were off because everyone else seems to love it and continues to buy it…

Just looked it up right now and I’m not the only one! Yay! Apparently it’s the vinegar in the dressing that affects the pasta. Or something. Look it up. Freshly made pasta salad is amazing, but not store bought…

So who are the ones buying/choosing macaroni salad over coleslaw at the local chicken place? Does it not taste bad to them?

Have you noticed the taste I’m talking about (some describe it as metallic but not me), or does it taste fine to you?

I've never been a big fan of pasta salad but maybe because I've only gotten crappy ones like you mentioned. Other foods just don't work from the grocery store either. Bleu cheese dressing is so easy to make compared to that awful stuff in a bottle. Good sauerkraut especially compared to that junk in a can. Chinese hot mustard! It doesn't last. The stuff in a bottle is terrible and not hot. A teaspoon of mustard mixed with a teaspoon of water is the real stuff.

I agree, I can't stand store bought pasta salad and when I make pasta salad at home, I generally don't use vinegar even though it tastes good fresh. The problem is that if you have any left over, the vinegar sets into the pasta and it will taste "off" to me the next day.

This is normally how I make my pasta salad except I use pine nuts instead of pepitas in the pesto: Pesto Pasta Salad

I will vary the contents that I put in the salad and sometimes I'll use a different nut or a green other than basil to make the pesto. Edited to say that I use a lot more garlic than this recipe calls for also.

It will not taste off kilter the next day.

If I'm making a salad that requires mayonnaise (like potato salad), I make sure that the ingredients on the mayo I buy does not list vinegar but instead lemon or lime juice.

Yes, even homemade tastes bad the next day. Now that I know it's the vinegar, I'll make smaller quantities or add the dressing closer to the time it will be eaten. Even the texture of the pasts changes. It's truly disgusting. Good to know about lemon juice...

Anyway, pesto recipe looks good. Never think of using pesto for cold pasta...

You've just answered a question I've been asking myself for decades! So that funky taste is from vinegar. Makes sense!

Lucky tater salad doesn't have vinegar. 😁

Homemade mayo is best and doesn't take that long. There are many different ways to make it with and without vinegar.

Homemade mayo Google search

I do notice a bit of a strange taste in the pasta salads at the deli, but I'm not put off by it.
