Congress hasn't provided much of anything to state or local governments. I speculate that is one reason for red state governments to want to reopen. They want to tax the economy.

He will have heard often enough from Drs Fauci and Birx that easing the lockdown and gradually reopening businesses shouldn't happen before there's a system in place frequently to administer huge numbers of tests, and analyse them, and act on the results, so when he thinks about testing, and how the two valets, and now Katie Miller, had all been tested frequently, he vaguely remembers this and he thinks, hmm.. despite what they told me, all those tests don't seem to doing the White House staff much good. To my mind, at least if I properly understand the article, this isn't something for which the Democrats should attack Trump.

Congressional investigators in Washington are demanding information about loans and other funds that the Trump Organization has requested from foreign governments, including Britain, in the wake of the coronavirus crisis.

The demand for information follows a media report last month that said the Trump Organization was seeking UK and Irish bailout funds to cover wages of employees who had been furloughed from the company’s golf properties in Europe due to the pandemic.

In a letter to Eric Trump, the president’s son and vice president of the Trump Organization, Carolyn Maloney, the Democratic chairwoman of the House oversight and reform committee, suggested the decision to seek funding in the UK was problematic and potentially a violation of the US constitution, which calls for a president to have undivided loyalty to the US.

At the start of our lockdown, our government announced a programme whereby, if a business furloughs staff while it's closed, rather than simply terminate their employment, the government will pay them 80% of their regular wages.

That's available to all businesses in the UK affected by the pandemic, and there's nothing improper, to my mind, about the Trump Organisation furloughing the staff and thus enabling them to receive 80% of their regular wages, at least -- far better they do that than if they simply terminate their contracts.

The Trump Organization is solely owned by Donald Trump. He put it in a revocable trust to be run by his children while in office, but he still owns it.

So our Congress is upset because he didn't ask permission.

But what's he actually accepted from HMG?

The way the scheme works, HM Revenue and Customs know what The Trump Organisation's employees earn every week/month, because they receive from the golf courses' finance offices the employees' tax and National Insurance contributions under the Pay As You Earn scheme.

So, for furloughed employees, HMRC reverse the process and pay the emergency support to The Trump Organisation, who then pay it to the employees via their regular payroll run.

The funds pass through The Trump Organisation's bank accounts, that's all, and I don't see that as accepting something of value, any more than it is when an employee who has paid too much tax under PAYE receives a refund via his or her paycheck.

It's not like foreign governments booking suites at his Washington hotel to put money in his pockets.

Certainly. All I'm saying is that, at least on the basis of the information in the news report and of Trump Jr's comments as quoted there, I don't think there's much there for the Democrats to uncover, since it would appear The Trump Organisation is simply participating in the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme introduced here in March, as are most other non-essential businesses in the UK that intend to re-open when the lockdown ends.

The money is paid to the employees via the employer's bank account, but the money goes to the employee, not the employer.
