Didn't Fox say they were doing some protest over whatsisname Carlson getting doxxed or whatever? Prolly some lame attempt at a boycott. We know Wikileaks, Fox News, and National Enquirer are all in bed with Trump so maybe they've decided not to bother hiding the connections anymore.

Interesting thread here, speculating about what's going on. I don't like speculation, normally, but a lot of people seem to be behaving rather unexpectedly at the moment. Maybe Mueller has something dramatic up his sleeve, which Trumptydumpty knows about and that's why, like Achilles before the gates of Troy, is sulking in his tent:

Kim Dotcom? I would be really surprised if Trump would take this soufflé and poser serious.

Trump continues to attack Macron sharply, misinterpreting (willfully?) Macron's suggestion to build a common european army. Btw Merkel supports Macron's desire. Trump considers this as an act against the USA.

Politico cited a tweet by Trump
"“Emmanuel Macron suggests building its own army to protect Europe against the U.S., China and Russia,” Trump began in his first tweet. “But it was Germany in World Wars One & Two - How did that work out for France? They were starting to learn German in Paris before the U.S. came along. Pay for NATO or not!”

Trump goes on the attack against Macron

The Guardian writes
"The biting words are an escalation of the attack Trump made on Friday in which he said Macron had been “very insulting” by suggesting Europe needed its own army to protect itself against the US, China and Russia. He appeared to be conflating, however, Macron’s desire to strengthen Europe’s military forces – an ambition Trump himself has demanded as he seeks to reduce US contributions to Nato – and comments made by the French president in a radio interview about the threat of cyberhacking from other countries including the US.

Trump has also been riled by Macron’s warning on Sunday at a ceremony to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the first world war about the thrust of global politics. Macron, clearly with Trump partly in mind, denounced those who embrace nationalism and put “our interests first”, adding that “our demons are resurfacing”."

The US continues to alienate every friend she's ever had (Lafayette would weep), thanks to our disgusting excuse for a president.

True, though since some of the charges against him involve money laundering, I can see how Trump and some of his circle might well have been involved in the past. The people Trump takes seriously are not always the people you or I might take seriously, after all.

You're right, of course, and Kim Dotcom probably has nothing to do with it, but it seems odd that all the rest have gone silent in this way. We'll see soon enough if they start again, of course.

Well, if I were the US president I would do exactly the same, maybe somewhat nicer, but I would do it.

Why? Because America is still a global empire, and the last thing any empire really wants is the rise of possible equal powers. The EU already has a bigger population than America, almost the same economical power, but lacks the military. An European Army would possible accelerate the unification of the EU, and this is nothing which is in the interest of America, the EU getting stronger on the military side, and thus getting more influence worldwide, while the EU would be less dependant on America, and that's what Trump wants: an EU, which very much so depends on America. Divide and conquer is still a thing nowadays.

Of course this strategy already didn't work so well with China, because either people will retreat or work even more harder then to achieve their goals.

Imho the far better option would have been to develop the so called "transatlantic relationsship" b etween the USA and the european allies of the USA, instead of insulting the europeans, twittering humilating nonsense about european countries and certain european politicians and of this "America first" phrase, . doing so a lot of damage to the alliance This was it , what the idea of a common european army rekindled and made it for europeans a logical consequence on the background of such an USA-leader. At least the prevailing mood here in Germany was that the country was quite happy with the leading role of the USA (before Trump). But as politicians of the different german parties said, now we have to care for our own

He doesn't know what NATO is. That's all.

An increase in military spending is literally what he asked for earlier when he said he wanted them to provide more of their share.

But he doesn't know what NATO is. He thinks that it's all the US and that other countries pay directly for protection. He wants tribute, not a mutual defense pact.

Nice words from an idealistic point of view - but I am more a fan of poltiical realism, because in the end it is exactly that what drives most political decisions nowadays. Not human rights, nor other things like that, but always the same old stuff, namely maintaining and probably even expanding the own influence, getting and securing access to necessary ressources which are not in the own country, and maybe finding new trade partners to increase the own wealth.

Those are the driving forces behind most political decisions, nothing else. The so called "transatlantic partnership" never was one, it was always a lie, because partners are on equal terms, but in this "partnership" America always made crystal clear if needed who's the boss and who's the leud. And oh boy, if you tried to misbehave then, you were always for sure in for a rough treatment. And no other country in the 20th century was so busy with interfering and meddling on other countries' affairs than America; the Wikipedia list is huge.

And maybe the German government believed or still believes in this thing, I mean it's for sure easier and safer than to get an bigger army again, which always makes due to the history of the last two decades Germany's neighboring countries pretty nervous.

But the thing is: America at the moment is exactly doing what I described in the first paragraph. This has always been the driving force of all American foreign politics, sometimes nicely like an iron fist in a velvety glove, with Trump you just get an quite unobstructed view on their real intentions and goals. But the intentions have always been the same since decades, namely what I wrote in the first paragraph.

And why is that so? Because the politicians - doesn't matter if America, Japan, China, India, France, UK, Germany or whatever - fear to tell their fellow citizens the blank truth, that our lifestyle while nice, is unsustainable, and that in order to maintain it they have to fight either using diplomacy or using military options to sustain the current levels all of us do enjoy so much, and want to be able to experience forever so to speak.

George F. Keenan, who was one of the architects of the US foreign policy after WWII, wrote in memo PPS23 this about Asia back then:

"Furthermore, we have about 50% of the world's wealth but only 6.3% of its population. This disparity is particularly great as between ourselves and the peoples of Asia. In this situation, we cannot fail to be the object of envy and resentment. Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of disparity without positive detriment to our national security. To do so, we will have to dispense with all sentimentality and day-dreaming; and our attention will have to be concentrated everywhere on our immediate national objectives. We need not deceive ourselves that we can afford today the luxury of altruism and world-benefaction. "

In the end it comes down to this: America alone needs 40%+ of the worlds ressources to maintain its standard of living; China wants to have this way of living for its 1.3 billion something people as well, so some day they might up needing this share of the cake as well, and the same applies to India. And that's the problem: this standard of living in the long term is just not doable for these three countries alone, unless you have a second earth parked around somewhere in your trunk, more so if you put in Europe into the mix.

In reality most intelligent politicians do fear their own people, because they have no illusions whatsoever what might happen to them, if they are unable to maintain at least at a certain level the well accustomed living standard of their people without a suitable substitute: people with pitchforks going after them, riots, civil war, revolution. Take whichever scenario you like, you'll end up with some dead popular politicians. That's their justified fear.

So this is why the countries are behaving like they do; from an American perspective an European army like Macron suggested would mean that America would have much less influence on Europe, like it has at the moment. Having less influence on the EU means that the EU would become a much stronger competitor for global power, and a strong EU is something which is quite simple spoken not in the national interest of America, but goes strictly against it.

By the way the idea of an European army would have evolved regardless of Trump, just because due to the fact that the EU wants its own slice of the cake, and that Europeans interests are for sure many times not compatible with American interests. So in order to realize the own interests, the EU needs to have the proper tools at their own disposal so to speak.

Of course, Trump being who he is lacks the finesse and diplomacy to address this in nice, clouded ways. But even if someone more suited would be in the oval office, the goal and intentions would be for sure the same.

The only thing you may not have taken into account, Bartholowmew is that the captains of industry and foreign exploitation and our elected officials over here have traditionally been of European heritage and they had significantly more respect for Europeans than for less white people in Asia and Latin America whom they felt positively proud of f*cking with.

Trump lives up to his reputation.
President Donald Trump confused the Baltic states in Europe with the Balkans—and chastised leaders of the former for starting wars in the 1990s that lead to the break-up of Yugoslavia, French daily Le Monde reported.
His wife is from Yugoslavia! Which, come to think of it is probably the only reasons he knows anything about either region.

Visiting Arlington is kind of a minimum for presidents on Veterans Day. I can't say that I have kept track, but I would be surprised if there was another recent example of the President simply staying in and not laying a wreath or visiting a VA Hospital or a military base.
It's also a freaking *18 minute* drive from the White House per Google Maps. I'm sure the President's car can make it in less because they would block off the route. It's 2.3 miles, less than the distance to the nearest fast food place to my house.

Narcissists ARE capable of finding out and realizing they are factually wrong about something. Usually if that happens they just deflect and change the subject; but less often, they do this - suddenly and very loudly/forcefully take the "correct" side, as if they'd been there the whole time.
I think it is more likely he knows people in Malibu, which was hit by the fires. It's full of rich people and movie stars. That makes it personal.

If the US had been sane and not elected Trump, the US would have continued with its status quo hardon for military spending and policing the world. The EU benefits from this relationship because they get the guaranteed protection (via a defensive pact) of the largest military on the planet by a stupid margin. This is money they don't have to spend on a military themselves and can instead spend on other things. Like making the lives of their citizens better.

I guess you're right that it was a naive view because all it took was a whiny manbaby getting control of the toys for them to realize that maybe that paper isn't worth the fiber it's written on if one side of the arrangement decides on a whim to not act in good faith anymore. The EU increasing its military spending and general independence is the right goddamn call under these stupid-ass situations we're in.

Article 5 of the NATO charter, an armed attack on one country is an attack on all countries, has been activated once in the organization's history. It was in response to the events in the US on Sept 11 2001.

It's not the rest of the world that chose to take us down this road of mistrust and bad faith acting.
