They didn't get away with it. They were wrong, because Obama physically occupied the seat. So does Donald. No matter how much we would prefer otherwise he still gets to perform the roles of the president.

The fact that he got fewer votes and regularly violates the oath of office are indictments of our system and how it's not actually a Democracy. But yes he is president because the rules say he is.

The rules are bad and wrong and shitty and should be changed and/or ignored entirely if needs be.

Visiting Arlington is kind of a minimum for presidents on Veterans Day. I can't say that I have kept track, but I would be surprised if there was another recent example of the President simply staying in and not laying a wreath or visiting a VA Hospital or a military base.

It's not normal. If the president is too ill, then an appropriate replacement is sent, such as the vice president.

No, it's not normal. I can't think of any sitting President who didn't at least make an appearance during a Veterans' Day observation. I don't think Trump has taken ill, at least not physically. He just recently lost the House and is being a complete butt about it.
