Also, I have an issue with both paintings. I just don't see Jackson hanging out all buddybuddy with modern Democrats, but more importantly, I can't see Teddy Roosevelt not beating the crap out of Twitler; the man trying to sell off all of those parks that Teddy advocated for.

Which brings up a question: why does donnie have a picture of him in the oval office? After all, he and the rest of his bunch always point out that Lincoln was a R. Despite the fact that his views would have seen him drummed out of the party long ago.

How Fascism Works review: a vital read for a nation under Trump

I've just finished reading it. It's certainly very thought-provoking, though in some ways I found his analysis rather unsatisfying, for reasons I can't quite pin down as yet. I think it's to do with the way he sometimes seemed to elide the distinction between fascism and authoritarianism (fascism, I would say, is a subset of authoritarianism). Similarly, he often seems to conflate attitudes which fascism espouses or exploits with fascism itself. For example, while I would certainly agree with him that fascism idealises fixed and hierarchical gender roles, it doesn't necessarily follow that all sexists are fascists. Again, I would say that fascists are a subset of sexists.

Certainly I found it far less persuasive than Timothy Snyder's book The Road To Unfreedom, which covers broadly similar ground.

Nevertheless, I would certainly recommend it. It's well worth reading. There's a 5 minute video about it in the NYT:

Thank you so very much for that (as usual) astute review of the book. You've given me much to think about as I read it. I agree with your observations, in general, and will certainly have them in the back of my mind while I read the book.

Seems he's keen on repeating his success story he had back then in Atlantic City. The last year the federal budget was balanced and had some surplus was 2000; since then it has always been in debt.
