I think it boils down to whether or not I want to accept QAnon as a religion.
If we start going down that path, how long before anything outside of conservative Protestant denominations gets protection in red states (or even blue states where law enforcement is more conservative than the overall population)? The First Amendment requires us to give credit to the religious beliefs and practices of a person, even if cynically used, so long as it does not contradict a compelling government purpose. Some dietary requirements may be so disruptive that they can be waived (for example, prisons can prohibit slaughtering animals for food on the premises on safety and hygiene grounds), but otherwise we must take people's statements of faith at face value, especially when they are outside of mainstream religions. Otherwise it is freedom of specific religions, not freedom of religion.

Troy is locking down its town hall after anonymous threats came in this weekend from people angry that Police Chief David Ellis attended last week’s protest in Washington.

“It’s cancel culture gone crazy,” Select Board Chair Richard Thackston said Monday.

Thackston said threats were made to execute town officials after it became known Ellis was present at the protest, which later turned into a violent insurrection at the Capitol. Gov. Chris Sununu has called the rioters “domestic terrorists.”
Thackston is, naturally, part of the problem

They're [Facebook and Twitter] not banning Trump because they disagree with him but because they have observed that he is abusing their platforms to incite disorder and political violence.
Social media companies aren't worried about abuse of their platforms. They had four (or more) years to act on that problem. They chose to do nothing. Social media companies are dumping Trump and all the other right-wing bullshit for one simple reason: they've done the math. They now believe it costs them more to keep platforming the bullshit than it does to eliminate the bullshit.

It's the same with all these other corporations now suddenly growing a spine and deciding — oh hey, maybe disingenuous conservative assholes don't deserve corporate money/support/sponsorship. The corporations made their choices years ago. The wind changed direction and they're changing with it. Wait a year or two and see if the money has gone right back to the people and organizations these corporations suddenly find radioactive.

For capitalists, all decisions boil down to maximizing profit — or minimizing losses.

More about the self-coup:

Donnie's mistake was not getting the military on his side. If he'd spent more time cozying up to soldiers instead of calling them "losers" and "suckers", last Wednesday might have turned out very differently. Thankfully, Donnie's an idiot. A clever idiot, but still an idiot. The next would-be American dictator will be a lot smarter — and far more successful.

Sure, and we can all feel relieved that it's in the interests of capitalism generally and social media companies in particular that the US be a stable and more or less democratic republic that respects constitutional norms, and that it's not in their interests to have the US run by someone who would long ago have been placed on permanent medical leave if he was CEO of anything they owned.

But my point was that, whatever their motives, Twitter and Facebook are banning people not for expressing right-wing views but for trying to foment insurrection.

Like Rudy, like Scum

Extremist right-wing groups in support of President Donald Trump mistakenly called for an armed rally at an Alaska shopping center—and not at the similarly named courthouse by the state Capitol building nearly 600 miles away.

The far-right Tree of Liberty and Boogaloo Boys websites scheduled protests for the upcoming weekend to challenge President-elect Joe Biden's election victory over Trump, similar to the ultimately violent U.S. Capitol riots last Wednesday. But organizers confused the Dimond Center Mall in Anchorage with the Dimond Courthouse in Juneau, the state's capital. The "Refuse to be Silenced" rally plans in support of Trump on January 17 prompted the mall to announce it will be shut down on that same day.

Actually I was intending the blanket pardon for the insurrectionists. Unless I'm mistaken, and I hope I am, he could still pardon all of those who have been arrested.
Again, the problem is specifics. He can issue a pardon for a specific crime for all of them, but he can't pardon all of them for all of their crimes without even knowing what those are and before the investigation has even finished identifying those who committed crimes. I know he has pardoned murderers who worked for Blackwater, so that's how far he'll go in pardons. However, I doubt that even Trump will dare issue a blanket pardon for murder and felony murder charges. There isn't time for him to do this. Even if there were, like the pardon issued by Carter, in order to receive it, the criminal getting pardoned must come forward and admit to the crime.

All joking aside, I'm pretty I've used the old-timey phrase "possessed of a certain low cunning" in the past to describe Donnie. Clever but morally bankrupt.

But my point was that, whatever their motives, Twitter and Facebook are banning people not for expressing right-wing views but for trying to foment insurrection.
Apologies if I implied your view was wrong; it's not. I only meant to highlight that corporate motivations are never entirely altruistic, if they ever could be altruistic in the first place.

‘Unprecedented’: Feds Say Hundreds Of Trump Rioters Can Expect A Knock On The Door

Michael Sherwin, acting U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, said at a press briefing that the U.S. Capitol was essentially a crime scene and that the FBI was working around the clock to hunt down the hundreds, if not thousands, of Trump supporters who committed crimes and were allowed to leave the building.

Sherwin said that more than 170 subject file cases had already been opened and that the number of charges was going to “geometrically increase.”

“The range of criminal conduct is really ... unmatched in any type of scenario that we’ve seen at the FBI or DOJ,” Sherwin said. “We’re looking at everything from simple trespass, to theft of mail, to theft of digital devices inside the Capitol, to assault on local officer, federal officers both outside and inside the Capitol, to the theft of potential national security information, to felony murder. Just the gamut of cases and criminal conduct we’re looking at is really mind-blowing.”

And use Republican instead of trump loyalist. I can see where in some cases you may need to use it but until the Reps take more responsibility for all this, we shouldn’t make much distinction between the two, no? They were Republican insurrectionists.
