There’s a woman on my floor who’s had a Christmas wreath on her door for the last 3 (4?) years. I could see the price tag partly hidden inside the velvet ribbon. After about 6 months, I cut the tag off. My anal self just couldn’t take it anymore. After all this time, it has a layer of dust atop its plastic pine-ring of Pagan-Christian tackiness. I die a little each time I walk past it, but I wouldn’t dream of complaining to the building management. Still wish she’d think of taking it down once the holidays were over.

Has anyone checked to see if she hasn’t been dead in there for 3-4 years?

By the time the 1st of January rolls around I am at the point where I can no longer stand the clutter of Christmas and MUST take it all down and put it away. Also by then, the tree is so dry that I fear a brush fire in my house. Consequently, it's become a New Years day activity for me to take all the stuff down and put it away and then have a lovely New Years dinner in a place that looks like Christmas never happened.

The 12th night falls on July 12th most years.
oops

Twelfth Night (also known as Epiphany Eve) is a Christian festival on the last night of the Twelve Days of Christmas, marking the coming of the Epiphany.[1] Different traditions mark the date of Twelfth Night as either 5 January or 6 January, depending on whether the counting begins on Christmas Day or 26 December.[2][3]
A superstition in some English-speaking countries suggests it is unlucky to leave Christmas decorations hanging after Twelfth Night, a tradition also variously attached to the festivals of Candlemas (2 February), Good Friday, Shrove Tuesday, and Septuagesima.[4] Other popular customs include eating king cake, singing Christmas carols, chalking the door, having one's house blessed, merrymaking, and attending church services.[5][6]

Back in the day February 2 was the official ending of the Christmas period in the Catholic church.
Nowadays it is the weekend after Epiphany.

My father and I used to build the navity scene every year in our church for about 25 years and the parish clerk always asked us to leave the nativity scene in the church up until February 2, because the old folks would still burn a lot of candles there every weekend (so extra income for the parish).
The dean found that oldfashioned and opposed, but in the end money talked and the clerk won the discussions every year. :)

If they still do that I don't know. After all the scandals discovered in the Catholic church I no longer set foot in there, other than at funerals and weddings where I have to attend.

After my family moved to the suburbs, when I was 10, my mother used to take us to a huge creche that was performed by live actors, narrated over a PA system. It was at a church located on El Camino Real in Burlingame and it was made somewhat more mysterious by the huge eucalyptus trees that lined El Camino Real through Burlingame. There must have been some sort of schedule for the performances, or perhaps due to the brevity of the performances -- 10 minutes, if I recall correctly -- they were continuous.

There were neighborhoods in San Francisco that would coordinate on Christmas themes to which each house would adhere. These would attract enormous flows of car and pedestrian traffic to look at the displays. I don't know when they took down everything, though.

We haven't done anything for christmas since the Aughts. That last time was celebrated by the destruction of a tree our neighbors had planted to obscure our view across the Monterey Bay. After their little display of unneighborliness, they had decided to default on their mortgage (they had a second home) rather than try to sell their home; their former home was empty for about 8 months after until their lender could sell it. So my husband took a large pruning saw and demolished the tree, and pulling it around to serve as our Xmas tree.

A restaurant must pay workers $140,000 after allegedly hiring a fake priest to extract confessions of workers’ ‘sins’
A restaurant in California has been ordered to pay $140,000 in back wages and damages to employees after it hired a priest to extract workers’ confessions, in what federal investigators are calling “the most shameless” acts of corruption an employer has taken against its staff.

The US Department of Labor said an employee testified that owner Che Garibaldi, who operates two locations of Taqueria Garibaldi in northern California, hired a fake priest to hear confessions during work hours and “get the sins out,” including asking them if they had been late for work, stolen money from the restaurant or had “bad intentions” toward their employer.
“Under oath, an employee of Taqueria Garibaldi explained how the restaurant offered a supposed priest to hear their workplace ‘sins’ while other employees reported that a manager falsely claimed that immigration issues would be raised by the department’s investigation,” said Regional Solicitor of Labor Marc Pilotin in the release.

Someone put a copy of The Light through my letterbox sometime in late 2021. It was completely fucking nuts. Perhaps I should offer to distribute 10 or 20,000 and take them straight for recycling :)
More on The Light (and other far-right woo-merchants)

It’s an interesting bifurcation. On his various “clean” web postings Liosatos is heavy on the wellness woo, as in:
Remembering to remember how amazing and miraculous and special we each are is not always easy, it takes practice, but with practice the gap between forgetting and remembering diminishes and we can be in a state of re membering all the time.... You are magnificent and amazing, keep re membering and never forget it...Have a great day..
But go on his amazing, miraculous and special video channel or read his magnificent and amazing Facebook postings and what you get (over several years) is encouragement to “read the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion to know who your masters are”, or advice to remember that “Zionist Israel owns your governments”. Still extant are several of his YouTube interviews, such as the one where he talks to a man in the US called Harry Vox who details exactly and for an hour how “the Jews” are actively weakening the West so they (sorry, “we”) can take over the world. I must confess I didn’t bother with any of Liosatos’s conversation with a Paul Craig Roberts titled Putin's Fight Against Western Hegemonic Satanic Psychopaths. I think the title gave us the gist.

The 17-year-old at the centre of the case was groped by the 66-year-old man while at high school in Rome.

She described walking up the staircase to class with a friend, when she felt her trousers fall down, a hand touching her buttocks and grabbing her underwear, BBC reported.

"Love, you know I was joking," the caretaker reportedly told her when she turned around.
A public prosecutor in Rome asked for a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence but this week the caretaker was acquitted of sexual assault charges.

According to the judges, what happened "does not constitute a crime" as it lasted "just 10 seconds."

Let's kick the judges in the face for 9 seconds, and see how they feel about that.

We (general we) want to fly cheap, cheaper, cheapest. Going to Barcelona or Rome from here is cheaper trough air than with the train.
In the end one gets where one pays for.
