SLU/VV1 is in no way unusual in this regard. This happens in any community, virtual or otherwise. Until you've been around enough to grok the shibboleths any new place will feel unwelcoming and strange. The degree to how unwelcoming a specific place may feel to any specific new visitor is going to be less a function of the place itself and more a function of that individual's prior experiences.I have to disagree. We can be /brutal/ to new people who do or say things outside our normal scope. It doesn't happen often, but the pile-ons can be epic and cruel (and I'm not talking about the group wrong-headedness about pre-bacon). Most of the time, we're pretty nice, and we can be awesome when someone is in trouble or upset. But, the reputation was not totally unearned.
Using SLU/VV1 as an example, politically this community breaks mildly to moderately left of centre. If your personal views are centrist or break right, and you happen to step into a political discussion early in your time here, then of course this place will feel unwelcoming. If on the otherhand you spent a lot of time talking SL specific things and while doing began picking up on all the little in-jokes and foilbles, you might feel less uneasy when you do finally get involved in more heated topics
