I must admit that there is something special about SLU/VV1. Whatever it is, it keeps me coming back for more... kudos to Cristiano!
let me guess, could it be the back links?

I am skimming the forum. Looks like the giggles beach people (the ones responsible for my title) got a mention in a post as being vindicated now. Umm, the official forum loves pedos now? ok ....
My God, that was how many years ago, and they're still whining about losing their pedo hangout?

OFFICIALLY DEAD. The moron who called us all socialists, or whatever, used a link to Return of Kings (the MRA/anti-woman hate group) website as an attempt at a legitimate argument. Well. Bless his heart.

I didn't find that. Mind you,I didn't look terribly hard, either.
But I did find him spouting off Ayn Rand nonsense in another thread. A thread that was, coincidentally, also closed.

If a person hasn't got Ayn Rand out of their system by the age of 22 they are an idiot. She talks a good line to begin with but the more you think of what she says the more you realize what bullshit her novels are.

Quoting screenwriter John Rogers:

"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs."

Thank you CC! That made my day. <3

Well, consider myself and a few others used to be top posters over there. When we found out that people could just report anyone and have it have inworld consequences without even an ll investigation we quickly realized being a top poster there was just making us bigger targets.

Which meant SLU and a few other sites suddenly got influxes of people when we decided where would be our new homes. I do not care to ever post on the official forums again if I have to hope nobody there takes offense/is having a bad day/just wants to make things annoying for me.

Which is probably why the official forums seem 'nice'. Everyone is walking on eggshells.
Hence one of my comments over there concerning "forced politeness/niceness"

Exactly. I love it over here where if swearing or going off-topic is appropriate you can do so without having to worry about breaking some rule and getting your in-world account dinged. The people on official forums that are being nice are not doing it because that is the natural social reaction to another post, it is because they are afraid to do otherwise.

Hell, you could be nice/following all the rules and if someone who declared themselves your enemy reports you you still could get an in-world suspension.

I don't think it's particularly difficult to disagree with people without swearing at them, nor even to be extremely insulting to them, if that's what I want to do. From what I've seen of fights in the official forums, posts tend to be removed primarily because they've launched into personal attacks, whether of people in the thread or people the poster doesn't happen to like.

Sorry, I meant swearing in general. Say you were talking about games. There is a world of difference between "Ack! I died!" and "FUCK! I died!" .... the former does not convey the same emotion.

Sure, but I thought you were talking about the difference between what you can post in forums like this one and what you can post in the official one, not about what you can say while playing games. I must have misunderstood.

There is no difference. Pretending that swearing - as long as it is not in excess - is somehow "bad" for any reason can cause forced sounding responses and even stronger backlash further down the road.

Point fucking blank - on a forum, such a restriction has no legitimate place. It's a casual environment. You're not presenting your opinions to a Board of Directors, a Judge, debating with any experts in any field in any official capacity....

If someone is so put out by such a thing, that is their own problem and they really need to deal with it.

Come to think of it, I'm not at all sure it is possible to swear in the official forums -- don't they still have that forum software that bleeps out words to which it objects (which is why, before they tweaked it, it turned the late singer and entertainer into Bleep van Bleep)?

The way I see it, swearing in an internet group is analogous to typing ALL IN CAPS -- that is, it's a way of emphasising a point that irritates some people, which is one reason I try to avoid it in public forums.
