Both Russia and China have long dreamt of pulling apart the western alliance. Trump is doing their work for them. Just a few weeks ago, it would have been beyond the Kremlin’s wildest dreams to see Canada’s main news magazine running a cover story on “Why America can’t conquer Canada”. The idea of European leaders invoking the EU’s mutual-defence clause against the US — not Russia — would also have seemed like fantasy. But these are the new realities.

I'm not real concerned over whether some people are offended over the word "Fuck". I don't use it to offend, that's just an incidental problem. But there ARE some things that I cannot begin to describe quite as accurately without an F-bomb. (example: anything Trump related).

I don't care about offending people in general, but do sometimes care about WHY they are offended. Many people don't like "bad words" for no clear reason. But I am sympathetic to people who feel that "retard" insults people with disabilities. I don't like to punch down.

Yeah. Sadly, compared to other nations, I think 'Family' matters a lot less in the U.S. (Less than 'Chosen Family', at least). But... to go way far afield... I think between the automotive push to make cars part of a person's identity and the culture of personal liberation through personal transportation, has resulted with a very highly transient culture that values family less and career prospects more.

So if someone's actions bring shame upon their family, the typical response is "So what? That's their problem."

Very important rule: the English gentleman (or lady) never intentionally gives offence. It's rarely necessary and when it is, it's deliberate and calculated. Or that's the principle, anyway, and it's one I try to follow.

It also helps explain why, whatever our politics, most Brits despise Trump and MAGA.

I can't get past that he seems to be wearing Trump makeup. His face is bronzed, but the skin around his eyebrows isn't!?

Also, part of the evil nuance with immigrant labor is both using it and opposing it. It's been intentionality inefficient at one or the other because legitimacy would drive wages up, and better enforcement would reduce labor availability. They don't want either of those, just the broken in-between half-assed middle ground that lets them get away with cheapest labor with the least worker protection, and least tax burden for the employer.
