555-1212 was the directory assistance number for an area code. It has often been used as a fake telephone number in TV and film, because any other number might end up deluging the owner of the number with calls. And yes, I knew it was a joke fake ad. The local paper is the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, not the Atlanta Journal.

Ok, woosh on me. Virtually all 555 numbers are fake, not just 1212. You can call the Electronic Federal Tax System at 800 555 3453 though.

Apropos of nothing, when I was stationed in Fallon, Nevada nearly 30 years ago, nearly all of western Churchill County had one telephone prefix: 867. And, yes, there was a 5309. And, no, its owner was not named Jenny. And, no, she was not amused.
