It has often been used as a fake telephone number in TV and film, because any other number might end up deluging the owner of the number with calls. And yes, I knew it was a joke fake ad. Ok, woosh on me. Virtually all 555 numbers are fake, not just 1212. You can call the Electronic Federal Tax System at 800 555 3453 though.555-1212 was the directory assistance number for an area code. Apropos of nothing, when I was stationed in Fallon, Nevada nearly 30 years ago, nearly all of western Churchill County had one telephone prefix: 867. And, yes, there was a 5309.
