First past the post winner takes all.I am going to confess that I don't understand why the US has a two party system. There is, I assume, some historical or structural reason for it?
Yep. I live in a very safe Liberal riding in Toronto, but even so the Liberals will likely poll under 50%, as they have in past elections.First past the post winner takes all.
in my last electoral riding in Canada there were three viable parties that could win, the center liberals, the “labour “ NDP, and the conservatives. And most often a tory would go to Ottawa on 34% of the vote with a firm mandate from Canadians to put homeless people in privatized prisons.
and that’s what happens with first past the post.

A super PAC engaged in a cynical two-step designed to simultaneously discourage Arab American and Jewish voters by advertising contrasting messages about Vice President Kamala Harris’ Middle East policies is being funded by a dark-money group that is bankrolled by right-wing tech and auto industry billionaire Elon Musk, according to a financial disclosure made public on Tuesday.
Here’s how it works: In areas of Michigan with large numbers of Arab and Muslim voters, Future Coalition PAC is running digital ads about how Vice President Kamala Harris is a staunch and unyielding supporter of Israel.
So Harris is in the pocket of Israel and the Jews, while simultaneously being run by the Palestinians. Someone has got to stop this monster. But it’s the second component of Future Coalition PAC’s advertising that really raises its cynicism to new heights. The group is simultaneously targeting Pennsylvania’s Jewish voters with advertisements claiming Harris has been “pandering” to Palestinians.
Somebody went unmanageably viral."Aseurasians"
Yes, the press has a lot to wrestle with when it comes to Trump, including his embrace of authoritarian strongmen, his refusal to vow to accept the election results, his criminal conviction and civil judgments for fraud and sexual abuse, and his racism and disparagement of women, LGBTQ people, and immigrants.
But his diminishing cognitive ability can’t be ignored. He may not be able to get a grip, but it’s long past time the news media and Republicans stop participating in the gaslighting. We can see reality with our own eyes.
Former President Donald Trump is scheduled to address a group of extreme right-wing media “prophets” and pastors who have claimed that “demonic forces” are behind the popularity of the Harris campaign, declared that Trump is “anointed to be king,” and said that Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris and vice presidential candidate Tim Walz “go to churches that are synagogues of Satan” because they are Baptist and Lutheran.
Trump was speaking in Latrobe, Palmer’s birthplace, on Saturday evening when the 12-minute tangent began. The former president began by praising Palmer’s career and describing his previous conversations with him. “There were a few golfers that you could say may be slightly better, a few, not many,” he said. “But there was nobody that had his magic.”
But the former president’s anecdote, which is just the latest in a series of increasingly bizarre rally claims, quickly devolved as he discussed some intimate details about the golfing icon.
“This is a guy that was all man,” Trump said. “He took showers with the other pros, they came out of there, they said, ‘Oh my God, that’s unbelievable.’ I had to say it.”
“I had to tell you the shower part because it’s true,” he added.
You can order a Shirley Temple.I'm not sure I can order an Arnold Palmer with a straight face now.
Maybe he's practicing for when he has to work the kitchen in the prison cafeteria.
