This is a really insightful post about why so many white men in particular support Trump:
It somewhat boils down to the same thing. They (Or I suppose "we", as I am a hetero cis white male who grew up with church) grew up with the hidden narrative that because of what they were, they were going to automatically be the top of the heap. That's not happening anymore, or at least SHOULDN'T be happening. So they have to look around, and see how they have been betrayed by the world. Could it be that the ingrained world view of them being the rightful masters of all things was wrong? Nope, can't be that! Maybe they themselves are somehow defective and that's why they are not the millionaire boss with three supermodel wives and the unquestioning respect and obedience of the world? FUCK NO! (or maybe, in the case of Incels. Same rabbit hole, slightly different tunnel) Obviously it must be something else, something that is actively working against them. The right wing in general is very quick to offer up an easy list of people to blame for anything that is wrong in your life. Even more, fascists harp on how everyone is really suffering, that the outer world is falling apart just like their inner world, and the right will help you defeat those enemies and make everything the way they were promised it was supposed to be. Why, the poor bastard will be a hero for standing up to the evil all powerful oppressors!
If you look at any of the follower's actions in this context, suddenly everything they do makes sense. Every bizarre double think, every strange fetishist behaviors. The leaders are likely not believers in most cases, but they have learned how easy it is to collect and control people by using this narrative. You never need to provide results, you just trot out the next scape goat.
