To add to this, I think a lot of white elderly conservatives are 100% on board with the republican party due to right wing media but many many young people are kind of edgy and like to maintain the pretense of being a moderate or independent even if their beliefs are far more consistent with the democratic party and many of them really hate Trump.
Very true. The Republicans are now, for the most part, out-and-out fascists (and the ones who aren't are prepared to go along with the ones who are), while the Democrats are a coalition of the centre-right and almost everyone to the left of them. It's not unlike Macron in France -- certainly I'd vote for him in preference to Le Pen, but equally certainly I wouldn't say I identified with many of his policies.

JD Vance is so much slimier and slicker than I expected. No wonder he hates being fact checked.
:qft: It scares me a little because I know a lot of Republicans who decided not to vote for Trump because he was old and appears to be unhinged. With all the stuff Vance had said about "childless cat ladies" and other things, many stuck him in the same box as Trump. However, after listening to the debate last night, in many cases, he appeared almost reasonable and certainly not unhinged. Also, I don't think he'd be that reasonable if he ever got into office, not for a New York minute.

Vance is the "Competent Trump" peolle have been warning about following up on Trump.
My hope for Vance isn't that he wouldn't do terrible things, it's that he'd not be able to get away with it. Vance simply doesn't have the weird cult appeal that Trump does. Trump somehow convinced a lot of people he was their savior and I just don't think Vance has that kind of weird charisma.

Trump also has that twisted "plausible deniability" because nothing he says has any actual certainty. Its alsoways vague "what ifs" or "people are saying" double speak.

Or like with 2025. He is actually right, he probably has nothing to do with (the creation anr crafting of) Project 2025. But that doesn't mean he won't blindly sign anything related to it slapped down in front of him.

I don't see that with Vance. He is part of that crowd and a believer in it. Which is why he is there, to slide in if Trump ends up in jail pr having a stroke or whatever.

Yeah, I agree. Trump says whatever is on his mind and many people see that as a form of "honestly" even when he contradicts the truth like crazy.

And I completely believe he had nothing to do with project 2025. ...but he certainly won't oppose it when the right wingers riding on his coattails push for it.

When you're doing a group project and you want a good grade, you don't want the dumbest kid in the room in your group.

The most used term in the whole debate was "I do agree with Tim/Senator Vance on, but..."

With Vance it depends where he is at, so at a rally you get unhinged attack rally Vance, while on the debate the more moderatoe looking one etc.

yeah, as I've stated before, he's not really one of the "insider" republicans because they know how unstable and how dumb he is. He's just the useful figure head they hope to ride in on.

It is easier to work with, and around, the dumb kid, than it is to work with intelligent people who adopt responsibility, and seem competent, but then don't produce results.
