lol I don't know whether they claimed the hats were literally fake, but it absolutely was the thing immediately after the riot for right-wingers to say that the whole thing was staged by BLM disguised as Trump supporters to make the real ones look bad.

Sarah Palin spoke to Fox News anchor Martha MacCallum on Wednesday evening, and joined in the chorus.

'We don't know who all were the instigators in these horrible things that happened today, I think a lot of it is the Antifa folks,' she claimed, citing 'pictures' sent to her.

On Newsmax, anchor Greg Kelly said that 'Trump supporters don't do these things'.

They were all citing a Washington Times article that was retracted only a couple of hours after it was published which originally claimed a "facial recognition company" identified "Antifa members" in photographs of the Capitol riot crowd. The cited company sent out multiple press releases and a C&D to the Times saying the article was false and they hadn't done any such analysis or made any identifications.
