Yeah....I'm not really sure what can be done about this. These diseases were once all but eradicated because the world learned to respect science and knew the value of vaccines. But I'm not sure it's even really possible to fight a populist movement that is making a point of sabotaging public health on purpose. You can't educate and inform people who believe education itself is (literally) the Devil.

Mexican tall ship strikes Brooklyn Bridge, snapping masts and killing 2 crew members

A Mexican navy sailing ship on a global goodwill tour struck the Brooklyn Bridge in New York on Saturday, snapping its three masts, killing two crew members and leaving some sailors dangling from harnesses high in the air waiting for help.

I discovered this channel during the Baltimore bridge collapse and I really haven't found another channel like it in terms of actual competence - the guy knows ships and shipping, and he favors waiting for facts over filling gaps with speculation and editorializing, and commentators like that are a precious resource IMO.

Crypto investor charged with kidnapping and torturing man in his NYC apartment for weeks

The victim, a 28-year-old Italian man, had been held since May 6th in cryptobro John Woeltz's SoHo brownstone until he escaped this past Saturday.

The victim said he was bound by the wrists and tortured for weeks inside the apartment. His captors, according to prosecutors, drugged him, used electric wires to shock him, hit him in the head with a firearm and, at one point, carried him to the top of a flight of stairs where they dangled him over a ledge and threatened to kill him if he didn’t share his Bitcoin password.

Believing that he was about to be shot, the victim was able to escape Friday after agreeing to give up his password, which was stored on his laptop in another room. When the suspect turned his back, Mattson said, the victim ran out of the apartment.

It sounds almost too much like some kind of (bad) movie plot; but the victim was treated in a hospital for injuries police said were consistent with his story. Upon entering Woeltz's townhouse, the cops discovered blood, the torture implements the victim described, and photographs of the victim being tortured.

Woeltz was ordered to surrender his passport and is being held without bond as, according to prosecutors, he has multiple means of fleeing at his disposal.

The most bizarre thing about the whole situation is that Woeltz, reportedly, is quite crypto-wealthy - he has loads of Bitcoin himself, so it's not like he needed the victim's money. And he notably asked for crypto, not real money. It makes one think there's some important shoe that's waiting to drop in this situation.

Gymnastics icon Mary Lou Retton faces a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence following her arrest in her West Virginia hometown.

Fairmont police stopped Retton on May 17 following a report about a person in a Porsche driving erratically. According to the criminal complaint, Retton smelled of alcohol and was slurring her words, and she failed a field sobriety test.

Officers also reported observing a container of wine in the passenger seat.

Judd Stone, the former Solicitor General of Texas resigned from his position in 2023 following sexual harassment complaints from colleagues in which he allegedly discussed “a disturbing sexual fantasy [he] had about me being violently anally raped by a cylindrical asteroid in front of my wife and children,” according to documents filed this week as part of a lawsuit against Judd.

“Judd publicly described this in excruciating detail over a long period of time, to a group of Office of Attorney General employees,” an internal letter written by Brent Webster, the first assistant attorney general of Texas, about the incident reads. The lawsuit was first reported by Bloomberg Law.

Something's off in Mary Lou Land -- I mean, aside from the obvious wine bottle on the car seat. (I note they don't say it was open ...)

She had that medical incident a year or so back that was going to be explained beyond "pneumonia," but never was. She and the family raised about a half-million for her treatment and pledged to give any extra to charity; there was never any accounting of what happened to the funds.

Looking back over the stories, I'm scratching my head over even the medical stuff that was reported. She was on "oxygen therapy" for weeks in the hospital. Huh? "Oxygen therapy", so far as I know or can find out, is just supplemental oxygen. I have a friend who has been on supplemental oxygen for years. He certainly isn't hospitalized and never was for that. He has one of those roll-around oxygen concentrator machines, wears a nasal cannula, and carries on with a reasonably normal life within some, admittedly, fairly narrow restrictions. If you really needed bunches of O2, you'd have a big ol' oxygen tank by your bed ... at home. There's just no need to be in a hospital for "oxygen therapy" unless you're in such dire straits that you need a hyperbaric chamber. At that point, there would almost certainly be a whole lot of other stuff going on that would make "oxygen therapy" the least newsworthy of the procedures. Honestly, a half-million wouldn't even be a down payment on what you would have spent in that scenario.

Maybe she was in rehab? Started with pneumonia then rehabbed?

It's puzzling. My sense is that we'll be hearing more about her, and it's not going to be pleasant. I hope I'm wrong.
