When doctors raised their concerns with the hospital authorities, the authorities took her side because they found it easier to believe that the doctors were scapegoating her:

Doctors were forced to apologise for raising alarm over Lucy Letby and baby deaths

From the Guardian report:

[One of the two paediatric consultants, Dr Steve] Brearey said that on one occasion, Stephen Cross, the hospital’s director of corporate affairs and legal services, said contacting the police would be “terrible” for the hospital’s reputation and turn the neonatal unit into a crime scene.

Nope. Not anywhere I've lived anyway. It's the landlord's choice as to whether or not they want to pony up for making online payments or wire transfers possible. It's not cheap or free.
Not just landlords and rent, either. Although I can make my car payment online with my debit card, I pay $12 for the privilege. When I complained about that, they said payments by check are free. Like, hello? The 20th century called, they want their archaic forms of payment back!

I see (I think). Back when I rented, my landlords used to give me a form, printed with their bank details, telling my bank to pay them the rent on a particular day each month, to sign and return to my bank. And if they didn't do that of their own accord, I'd type something up anyway and give it to my bank. You don't have that in the US?
I lived in apartments my whole adult life until 2015. The rent was always by check, cash or money order. That was the only thing I used checks for. There was one place I lived around 1980 in Somerville, MA. I don't know why but I paid in $2 bills. My rent was $230 as I recall, and I would go down to the bank each month then to the rental office and they would count them out.

I just go online in my bank app, type who I want to pay (landlord, bills like electricity, credit card, etc.) and press send.

I guess it counts as a transaction, so depending on your type of account, usually free.

We don't mind writing one check per month. That's only 12 checks per year. A book of checks is 25 and I don't get charged by the bank $2 per check to process the fee for processing checks on an account that has no monthly fees of any kind since it's a grandfathered "senior" account. A box of checks, the last time I had to purchase any, was only about $30 US for one box. I forget how many books are in a box: 5 or 6 or so.

It still pisses me off that banks claim cancelled checks are their property when for decades they returned all cancelled checks for reconciliation. No. I paid for the damn things; they belong to me.

My landlord still really wants cash. I can pay by card, but I have to cover the processing fee and it's like an extra $20. So I just dutifully take an envelope of money to the office every month and get a receipt right there.

INORITE, they were SO close.

What it doesn't say is why she did it. "Letby’s motives remain unclear". Uh, yes. That's one way of putting it.

Like most of the serial killers I have worked with and studied, Letby has been silent about what might have driven her to kill. In that respect she is like our worst British serial killer, Dr Harold Shipman, who also maintained his innocence and refused to accept any responsibility for the deaths of at least 215 of his often elderly female patients. It really is only in TV drama or on film that such murderers want to discuss what might have motivated them – usually to help with plot development and allow the central character to impress us with their ability to “enter the mind of a serial killer”.
Lucy Letby confirms yet confounds our ideas of a serial killer
Though, given her pleas of not guilty,, it's hardly surprising she's not been forthcoming about her motives for committing murders she denies having committed.

Always get a receipt even if you pay by check.

I can't emphasize it enough.

ALWAYS GET A RECEIPT. :grouphug:

Stupid people are born every minute.

Six years after Fyre Festival became synonymous with epic disaster, its founder announced he's relaunching the failed music and camping retreat — and its first drop of tickets have already sold out.

After a stint in jail for fraud, Billy McFarland — the founder and organizer of the infamous Fyre Festival in 2017 — is back with his latest venture: the same botched fest.

The first drop of 100 presale tickets for Fyre Festival II went on sale Monday for $499 a pop and sold out within a day, according to the festival's website.
Virtually no details were released about the event, which has “targeted for the end of 2024 in the Caribbean,” according to the site.

There were no lineup and no details about accommodation, and the location was vaguely set as “The Caribbean.” The Bahamas Tourism Ministry said last year the government “will not endorse or approve any event” on the islands “associated with” McFarland.

Oh, Florida.

Five women were arrested Monday for intentionally clogging a toilet at a wing joint in Longwood, according to arrest records.

FOX News reported that the intentional clogging led to a brawl between the five women and employees at Papa Bees around 9 p.m. on Saturday.
A supervisor allegedly told authorities that the women stuffed the toilet in the restaurant with wads of toilet paper. When an employee cleaned the bathroom, one of the women went back inside and clogged it again.

The supervisor allegedly asked the women to leave, and that’s when the group became “irate” and started yelling, according to FOX News.

One woman allegedly punched the supervisor in the face, prompting the others to join in by kicking, punching, pulling hair, and throwing objects at the employees.

Ruby Franke: '8 Passengers' parenting mum arrested on child abuse suspicion
A Utah woman who ran a popular parenting advice YouTube channel is facing child abuse charges after her malnourished son escaped from home, officials said.

Ruby Franke and her business partner Jodi Nan Hildebrandt were arrested in Ivins, Utah this week.

Officials also found Ms Franke's 10-year-old daughter in a malnourished condition at her partner's house.

Both women were charged with six counts of child abuse on Friday.

Arkansas now requires students to volunteer for community service

This is actually a bad and dumb idea IMO.

First of all, if it's mandatory, it's not volunteering, even if they're not getting paid and even if they technically get to "choose" the activity.

Second, apathetic teenagers who aren't personally invested in the objective and are only there because they're forced to be, are going to do a crap job at whatever the task is. It's going to make more work for whoever inevitably has to follow up and do it right (or do it at all). You can't legislate motivation.
