The informed public.

A new poll out of Tennessee found the majority of the state is prochoice. Fifty-one percent of respondents said they were ‘definitely’ or ‘somewhat’ pro-choice while 47 percent called themselves ‘definitely’ or ‘somewhat’ pro-life. But here’s where it gets interesting: A huge majority of voters, 75%, want abortion to be legal in cases of rape and incest. That’s not surprising, we see numbers like that in most states.
But here’s the thing: Less than 20% of the people in Tennessee know that the state’s abortion ban has no exceptions. Thirty-six percent said they didn’t know what the state’s ban entailed, 23% thought the state had exceptions for rape, incest and life, and 21% thought it was legal with limits at various gestational ages. This is fucking wild to me! It means that Republicans are relying on the fact that voters don’t really understand how extreme their state’s abortion ban is. Democrats would be wise to start a serious awareness campaign…

Yay for the Vatican investigating and getting rid of him.
Yep. I gave my WTF reaction in response to the priest doing what he did in the first place.

I'm having problems seeing how silent prayer anywhere can be an arresting offense.
From the article it seems that she had previously been part of a far more vocal protest and had an order against her restricting her from protesting outside the clinic. She was trying to evade the order.

Tbh, though, yes, it's a rather questionable arrest.

Because the area immediately around the clinic is subject to a Public Space Protection Order, which prohibits various activities in the immediate vicinity, specifically

i Protesting, namely engaging in any act of approval or disapproval or attempted act of approval or disapproval, with respect to issues related to abortion services, by any means. This includes but is not limited to graphic, verbal or written means, prayer or counselling,

ii Interfering, or attempting to interfere, whether verbally or physically, with a Robert Clinic service user, visitor or member of staff,

iii Intimidating or harassing, or attempting to intimidate or harass, a Robert Clinic service user, visitor or a member of staff,

iv Recording or photographing a Robert Clinic service user, visitor or member of staff or

v Displaying any text or images relating directly or indirectly to the termination of pregnancy

Christian anti-abortion groups started protests outside abortion clinics over here some years ago, modelled on the the protests in the US. Members of Parliament, despite the Government's initial reservations, voted to ban them, since we don't want to see here scenes here similar to what we've seen reported in the US.

If she wants to pray in the street, she has only to walk a couple of hundred yards and do so round the corner.

Well, she has certainly made her bed then, no complaints.

I'd rather thought she would only get tagged with a loitering offense, but if there is no loitering charge in Britain I am rather relieved, it being the unofficial "go to" for a police officer saying "I don't like your looks and I don't give a damn about civil rights, get the h out of here".

No, having seen what's happened in the USA, lawmakers have passed bi-partisan legislation, against the government's wishes, specifically to protect abortion clinics, their patients, and their staff, from protestors, particularly religiously-motivated ones.

European human rights law, to which Britain subscribes, views freedom of speech, assembly and religion as very important rights, but recognises several other rights, too, all of which may come into conflict with each other. It's therefore a basic principle that, when this happens, governments will have to restrict certain rights in order to protect others.

Government has to find the least restrictive and most proportionate way possible to do this, in an attempt to balance everyone's legitimate interests, but certainly some people's freedom of protest or religion don't automatically trump other people's rights to go about their lawful business in peace, free from harassment and intimidation.

Has anyone run the math yet on how long it will take for the Republicans anti-life policies to reduce their own population to the point of no longer having a significant effect on national elections?
