This morning along the New Hampshire coastline, it is raining. And it should reach 40 degrees today.

Don't worry, we'll be punished for this late in the week. Thankfully, I work from home on Friday.

Well, it was 14 F this morning and 16 now. Not gone outside yet. Stepmum had lost power yesterday at 8 am but it was restored by 3 pm. We still have power. Centerpoint Energy's outag tracker was down for over 24 hours but is up now but only updated every 30 mins instead of 5 like normal. At the time of this post, 1,377,364 customers are without "lights". Biggest hit areas appear to be w/nw Houston. Unsure why, but half of galveston, Liverpool, and quite a few scattered show as planned outages. I'm not sur if that's part of a rolling outage or probably more likely (based on unplanned outages right by them) areas cut off so that crews can repair lines.

So, we got into the 20s, but the outside kitty's water dish still had no ice - pretty sure the public adjuster saying our windows need to be replaced 'because of Sally' might be on to something - no wonder our power bills are so freaking high even in winter.

We're seeing a slight accumulation of snow on the ground in west central Alabama. Dallas County and Selma have closed all non-state/federal roadways because Snowmageddon1 Schools and busineses are also shut and I'm willing to bet there's not a loaf of bread on the shelves at the local Walmart. I have to teach via Zoom again tonight because the Cahaba watershed bridges will refreeze during class time. Not complaining because the summer heat around here is so utterly grueling that Wisconsin seems like a nice place to retire.

90%+ of our electrical power grid is safely under the ground.
It is a bit more expensive, but we have very little outage because of the weather.
That works great & isn't very expensive in large flat areas. If you live in a mountainous area like where I live it's impossible. Winding roads between high rocky timber covered mountains & along curving rivers don't allow for wires to be placed underground. Throw in a string of very small towns & there's no reason a power company would even think of spending that kind of money. Everyone here watches weather forecasts & if it looks like heavy rains, snow or wind then plan to lose your power. And plan to be among the last to get it back as most of the repair crews work on outages in heavier populated areas before they get to tiny remote towns.

The outage map shows 1.22 million without power as of 6pm cst. The map is a mess with more planned outage icons than outage ones. Water pressure is low and Houston's Mayor has advised everyone to please use water only for essential tasks and help conserve water by not running washing machines, dishwashers, or watering outdoors. Also to fill your tubs up and use that to flush your toilet with. I've yet to see a tub that doesn't leak some over several hours, I used some large plastic bins, kept in the tub in case they split of course. Filtered water in several jugs for drinking. We're all set here and I hope those who are impacted worse come through this well and get any aid available to them.

Just an update: My cousin's power eventually came back on after 33 hrs. The lizards are safe, and as she says, "thawing out and warming up." Her 3 dogs and 2 cats are doing fine, as well.

Warmer today, was only 32 over night but now it is spotty raining. Last night I presume ercot figured out how to do rolling blackouts as it jumped to 1.44 million without power. As of this moment it is at 1.29 million. Stepmum's power cut last night at 9pm, still off as of now but she's fine. Water pressure is a dribble for her, a tiny stream for us. Last night Pasadena issued a boil water warning. This morning Houston issued one as well.

It's getting above 0F during the day now and we're even looking at 40's next week, so everything is fine now.

Except that I now have to pig out on all the frozen stuff I've been storing in my car trunk. Anyone want a peperoni pizza and some chicken? Well, OK, if all my meals include meat I'll be fine before any of it spoils. At least I got it all at half price, even if I'll be feeling loagy most of the week.

Well this is Illinois so we're used to this sort of thing. Bout the only things that can knock the power out for short periods are tornados, super-high winds that aren't tornados and ice storms with high winds. Otherwise, this is nothing we haven't seen in the past, and we know how to deal with it. -7F this morning and school buses were running.

You can cook the thawed meat/foods then refreeze them. You can even refreeze previously frozen meat if it was thawed in a safe manner (i.e. slowly in a cold environment and not on counter).
