Dude. You live in Louisiana. You know, home of Jerry Lee Lewis? Jerry Lee "Sure, she's my 13-year-old cousin, but you wouldn't expect me to marry a stranger, would ya?" Lewis? I don't know if it is still true, but what you are describing was known as "courtship" in large parts of the South. You call your brother-in-law, the sheriff, so Cletus will pull his head out and marry the girl.
lol, so like basically a shotgun wedding but it's the cops holding the shotguns? :D

Some parents aren't concerned about the child, so much as their public reputation. Marriage makes it all respectable (in their mind). Just like the families that blame the sexual assault victim for telling on Uncle Billie, who is now in jail, so you've brought shame to the family.
Ugh yeah. And there's so much resistance in those quarters to getting past the attitude that a kid being abused by an adult is a mark of shame on the kid, or on her family.

I have trouble wrapping my head around this - like, imagine you're the family of a kid who got raped, and you turn to rapist into the cops, and then the cops come back to you and are like "Well if you make your kid marry him then the rapist won't face any consequences whatsoever for raping your kid" and you're like "What a deal, we'll take it!"???
That's not how it works. It's not the judicial system. It's the families. They're the ones who "negotiate the deal".

He may live in Lousyana but he will never see the dark underside. It's kept too well hidden. Only those like myself who lived there for nearly 50 years knows what really goes on behind the scenes.

You know, I think you're right. I grew up in a half-southern family so I guess I just absorbed that stuff. Cultural osmosis.

Sorry, Cody! Forgot you're a -- you know --- Yankee.

Don't make much sense to this upper Midwestern German/Scandihoovian either. They must make them different down there.

Congrats to the Moldovans. Sort of.

Moldova barely approves its EU referendum amid allegations of Russian interference
The former Soviet republic of Moldova voted in favor of securing a path into the European Union on Sunday, in a national referendum that was charged with geopolitical significance and shadowed by accusations of Russian election interference.

The vote enshrines Moldova’s pursuit of EU membership in the country’s constitution, marking a fundamental move away from more than a century of Russian influence.

But the referendum passed by the slimmest of margins — with just 50.39% voting "Yes," according to the Central Electoral Commission — injecting ambiguity into a vote that EU supporters had hoped would showcase the country's widespread desire for a European future.

The McDonald's was closed when he did this, so I don't know who the heck he was handing out food to but it wasn't actual customers. The press corps? His entourage maybe?
People who won't normally eat at McDonald's because they're too woke. You know, Trump supporters.

The downfall of this man like really deserves one of those long video essays. He was never a tremendously good person, but he had solid reputation and clout as a "doer", even if you didn't like the things he did. But then Trump came along and this guy took a swan-dive off the falls. He didn't just sacrifice his reputation for Trumpism but it's almost like his actual mental capacity is dramatically diminished too, he rambles and says weird inexplicable things; he's like Gary Busey but not funny.
