Kevin McCarthy to leave Congress at the end of this year
Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is resigning from Congress and will leave at the end of this year, he announced in a Wall Street Journal op-ed on Wednesday — a highly anticipated decision that comes two months after his unprecedented ouster from the speakership.

McCarthy’s decision will narrow the House GOP’s already historically slim majority, which just last week got smaller after the expulsion of ex-Rep. George Santos of New York. How much room Republicans have to work with next year will depend on the outcome of a handful of special elections in 2024.
“But now, it is time to pursue my passion in a new arena,” McCarthy said in the video. “While I will be departing the House at the end of this year, I will never, ever give up fighting for this country that I love so much.”
"I'm quitting, but you won't stop having to hear me bitch about it."

Seems like a fitting punishment to me. Working in fast food is no joke.
OMG For some reason, I first read that she had been sentenced to one month in jail, so I “liked” your post, but she’s sentenced to work in a fastfood place, too? Imaging being a fastfood worker and finding out judges are sentencing people to do your job cause it sucks so much.

I don't think that's the point of the Judge's sentence. I suspect there's more of a "walk a mile in someone else's shoes" motive behind it.

F*ck McDonalds. Here's how I get coffee when I'm at work:

I prepare the coffee puck when I'm at home, so I just need some hot water from the kettle in the office kitchen.

My brother has one of those, well, not as fancy. He got it because he’s often travelling in a van. He was like, here let me show you, and after the demonstration I was happy not to have to use it myself, ha ha. Makes good coffee, though.

Yeah, it takes a bit of work, especially when you're pouring more than one cup of coffee.

It's still nice to have, especially when the coffee machine is broken again.

(Also a nice Christmas present, BTW. - "Wacaco Nanopresso")

And so god spoke to House Speaker Mike Johnson, who now is sure he's on a divine mission similar to Moses! Oh, and also now House Speaker because of god's support as well. And maybe even the next president with god's blessings? Who knows...

Johnson then revealed that — in the lead up to the “tumult” of Kevin McCarthy losing his gavel and the chaotic GOP process of selecting new Speaker — he had been speaking directly to God. “Look, I’m a Southern Baptist, I don’t wanna get too spooky on you,” he said, provoking some laughter from the attendees. “But, you know, the Lord speaks to your heart.”

The message he received from God, Johnson said, was to prepare for a “Red Sea moment” — both for the Republican conference “and in the country at large.” Johnson said found the directive confusing but he continued to seek the counsel of God

“The Lord began to wake me up, through this three-week process, in the middle of night to speak to me,” Johnson insisted. “Now at the time,” he continued, “I assumed the Lord is going to choose a new Moses.” But because of his own lesser rank among the GOP’s leadership, Johnson said, he believed the heavenly message to be: “You’re gonna allow me to be Aaron to Moses,” citing the role of the Old Testament prophet’s brother and biblical sidekick.

But then Johnson watched as candidate after candidate failed to generate the necessary Republican support to win the Speakership. “Ultimately 13 people ran for the post. And the Lord kept telling me to, ‘Wait, wait, wait,’” Johnson recalled. “So I waited, I waited. And then at the end … the Lord said, ‘Now step forward.’” Johnson regaled the audience with his surprise to be tapped as the Moses figure: “Me?” Johnson said. “I’m supposed to be Aaron.” But that was not the message, Johnson insisted, recalling: “‘No,’ the Lord said, ‘Step forward.’

Johnson’s speech to the National Association of Christian Lawmakers — a group that seeks to enact its anti-abortion and anti-LGBTQ “biblical worldview” into law — is just the latest evidence that the politician who is now second in line for the presidency views himself as on a divine mission.

You know, Christianity isn't such a bad thing once you get all the smug and pride out of it. It"s people falling for all the clanging gongs, clashing cymbals, and hypocrites loudly proclaiming that is at the root of our problems here, a lack of understanding of the message - sometimes willfully so.

To steal a line from Margaret Thatcher's speechwriters, delivered to the Conservative Party Conference after the Labour leader Jim Callaghan rather rashly compared himself to Moses, leading the Israelites to within sight of the promised land but destined never to enter it himself,

Moses, keep on taking the tablets.
(Mrs Thatcher notoriously had no sense of humour, and it was apparently only with great difficulty that they persuaded her not to deliver it as "keep on taking the pills." They eventually persuaded her that older members of audience might take this as a reference to the contraceptive pill and be shocked).

I'm sorry, but I can't agree. As with any other religion, people who regard themselves as Christians manage to interpret their religion as meaning any number of different things, and particularly when it comes to social rather than theological issues. I'd say that, so long as someone subscribes to some pretty basic tenets -- Jesus was the Son of God, died on the cross, rose on the third day and ascended into heaven -- they're a Christian of one sort or another, no matter how repulsive their views on other subjects may be or may have been.

Speaking as someone who left all religions behind years ago, I see the problem as going beyond just pride and smugness - we have people in my city, in my neighborhood who aren't satisfied with just getting their way politically. They also insist that *I* should be subjected to their beliefs and strictures, no matter how ignorant.

And yes, it's merely a coincidence that my next door neighbor is actually named "Karen".
