Mon Oncle (My Uncle) - French, 1958

This film is all about making fun of modern architecture and conveniences. It is all silliness from the woman coming by gifting flowers, "They're plastic. They never wilt!", to the group eating dinner that need to move the table because the fish statue with its tail in the pool and its head four feet in the air spouting water has malfunctioned. God forbid they step on the pebbles instead of the tile rocks going down the paths.

Edited to add 1958's vision of a roomba and electric shaver.

Hasbro: Yeah we had hige success with out most popular toy property then we made Battleship. Didn't go so great.
No one can groove like the girls with the hooves, not even Robots in Disguise. The recent D&D movie, Honor Among Thieves, was fairly well regarded.

No More Excuses - Robert Downey Sr, 1968

This is a weird one for sure. None of it makes any sense. In this five minute segment near the beginning we have a soldier in battle in the civil war. He plays dead for 16 hours then runs for it. For unexplained reasons he ends up time travelling to 1968 Manhattan. On his way running for the trees in Central Park(?) he stumbles over a gay couple who just stare at him and he continues to run.

Segue to a speaker trying to convince you to join SINA, The society for indecency to naked animals. Animals should be clothed of course if they are higher than four inches or longer than six. Join our cause.

A reporter then goes to singles bars investigating why people go to them.

Next we meet an inept assassin trying to murder James Garfield.

Back to the vice president of SINA arguing that in the name of propriety and decency, animals want to be clothed.

So there you have five minutes of this 46 minute film. You are unlikely to see it unless you subscribe to the Criterion Channel.

I avoid reviews because I tend to be contrary. I like stuff reviewers don't, I dislike stuff they do... I rarely agree with the audience aggregate ratings.

About all I do agree with is netflix/prime. If the rating isn't better than a 3, I'm pretty sure that I'll hate it and regret wasting my time. I've found no "So bad it's good" stuff below 3 stars.

This looks fun, a bit like a modern fairy tale. And Millie Bobby Brown has been on a role with films for Netflix.

I get it, it's not supposed to be an origin story. But there sure do seem like a lot of superhero (and sure, supervillian) characters in a film just called Superman. So why not name it something more inclusive. Like...Super Friends?

I like the Christopher Reeve vibe with this Clark Kent.

Shouldn't it be more grimdark™? This looks suspiciously like it could be fun.

I'm hoping for a mix of both but it is more of a superhero story in a world where heroes are already established, so no more destruction of Krypton and more slogging. Superman exists and is known. Hawkgirl (yay) exists but no idea which version they are using. We get the best damn Green Lantern, Guy Gardener (FUCK YEAH) which keeps Nathan Fillion off the streets and employed. And a nod to Silver AGe Superman with Krypto! (OH FUCK YEAH) I like the big change in Clark Kent with the hairstyle. No longer are we questioning the intelligence of everyone in the world being fooled by a pair of glasses lol. The casting is awesome, I just hope the script is as well and not the WW84 horsecrap we got.
Fingers crossed.

My whole life I've been watching movies that are set in New York City, or show NYC getting pounded and/or destroyed by some kind of calamity, and I've always wondered what that's like for someone who lives there? Yeah the internationally-famous landmarks are pretty easy to spot; but what about anything else? All that stuff is just a generic city to everyone who doesn't live there, but how does it feel to like, recognize a place that mattered to YOU in the background?

I lived in Cleveland for a large part of my early life, and still look in now and then so I knew about the filming for this movie while it was going on. But a lot more of the city made it into even just these few shots in this trailer than I was expecting. Not just like, ground-level interior and exterior sets, I mean whole aerial shots of the city. Metropolis is supposed to be huge of course so there's a lot of "extra city" that's been added in the backgrounds, but like there's a LOT of Cleveland that I recognize in there. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy, despite the fire-breathing monster. ^^

ETA: Zack Synder and his gray-and-brown AAA-video-game-inspired ugly-world can get boned. :p
