Superman is set in Metropolis, which is not supposed to be an analog for NYC. But come on, right?

Did you know that at the start, Metropolis was kinda sorta meant to be Cleveland? (It's also supposed to be originally modeled on Toronto, which rather blows The All-American Hero idea out the window.)

No no, Metropolis in this movie is definitely Cleveland, that's what I'm trying to say. Like, the shot where the monster is breathing fire at a skyscraper (the Key Tower, by the way), that shot is basically just an unaltered shot of downtown Cleveland; I could name practically every single building in it! I only mentioned NYC as a comparison, considering all of the movies that tend to be set there. Including the Christopher Reeve movies - the landmarks are kind of unavoidably noticeable in those.

And yup, I did know that Superman was originally created in Cleveland. ^^

Metropolis and Gotham are both New York.

Ask DC writers and artists.

Dennis O'Neil said:
"Gotham is Manhattan below Fourteenth Street at 3 a.m., November 28 in a cold year. Metropolis is Manhattan between Fourteenth and One Hundred and Tenth Streets on the brightest, sunniest July day of the year."
Elliot Maggin said:
Our assumption always generally was that Metropolis was New York during the day and Gotham was New York at night.
Frank Miller said:
Metropolis is New York in the daytime; Gotham City is New York at night.

So DC's main capitals are on a time split (sort of a comic book timeshare?). So when clocks are set forward in the Spring, does Gotham's criminals benefit from a little sun that day, or are they forced to wake up an hour later?

We got the star locked in. Anyone want to write a script?

I have to defer to the writers obvs but honestly I always got a Chicago vibe from Gotham.

Pretty sure Star City is Seattle though, either way you cut it.

Yeah the internationally-famous landmarks are pretty easy to spot; but what about anything else? All that stuff is just a generic city to everyone who doesn't live there, but how does it feel to like, recognize a place that mattered to YOU in the background?
Makes me think of this.

I can't speak for a commonly featured city like New York, but there were shots from real Decactur (where I live) in The Informant and I thought it was super cool.

I was going to make a crack about Cleveland being a flat featureless ice-covered plane, but apparently you're serious. o_O

Me too, but it makes so much sense. They're like Besźel and Ul Qoma in China Mieville's novel "The City and the City". Citizens of Gotham agree they can't reach the towers of Metropolis, and the Metropolitans wouldn't be caught dead in Gotham.

I lived in Brooklyn when I saw Captain America, which spent a good bit of time in Brooklyn, and made several "We are Brooklyn!" type remarks/comments. It made watching the film while in a Brooklyn theater surrounded by Brooklyn citizens unexpectedly extra special.

Did I recognize a place in the background that I recognized? Well, the film was set in 1940s. While I lived in an apartment complex built in the 1920s, I did not actually see that in the film. Did watch the film in a theater near a bridge shown in the film.

It amuses me to imagine that the fire breathing giant monster might not be a big part of the story in the final film and is just a quick part of an establishing montage showing the types of things Superman deals with. After that he rescues a cat from a tree.

Speaking as a writer, bless your heart. I can assure you, though, that deferring to writers is 100% optional.

Not always. It moved or something. "Star City: Over the decades, Green Arrow has divided many of his adventures between the real city of Seattle, Washington and the fictional Star City—which earlier sources place in Northern California. But in the 2016 Green Arrow series, these two parts of Oliver Queen’s career were reconciled by establishing Star City as an alternate name for Seattle itself."
